Stylus Singles Jukebox

It has me in it, a little bit, and some other poptimists too. Some poor records get props this week. I like the diversity of the new format but I also miss its parochialism, actually seeing where in the charts all these tunes got to, and the gritted teeth as we had to 'tackle' hopeless post-Libertines wannabes yet again.

Dom Passantino's ability to be entirely right and yet so, so wrong will never cease to amaze me.

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Explain further, boss.

[identity profile] zenith.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
In the sense that I agree with you completely about Morningwood, abnd yet my reaction to your blurb is somehow still an "ewww". Similarly, a spot-on review of the Artic Numpties is ruined by the pointless pettiness of the "girth of an MP3 blogger" crack.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"girth of an mp3 blogger" BAHAHAHAHA i didn't notice that before!

[identity profile] byebyepride.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude the morningwood is aces.

[identity profile] zenith.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The rest of the album doesn't sound much like that.

It sounds more like Republica trying to "do" Le Tigre.

I like it.

[identity profile] umlauts.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish there were another album of Republica doing Republica.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
can the pro-pop massive please move into this decade sometime soon?

[identity profile] umlauts.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Will the indie massive please stop mocking me?

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
*looks around*

i see no indie massive! unless you mean dom

[identity profile] umlauts.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
Lex, you're like the indie equivalent of self-denying homosexual men. You accuse everyone else of being it, but it is you who is the indie-est of them all!

Seriously! You apply an indie mindset to the appreciation of pop.

Though since Konichiwa Records _is_ independent, your assessment of Robyn as indie is quite accurate.

[identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
pop need not be "up to date" ---> viz lady in red is bigger pop than YOU KNOW HOW TO HANDLE

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
but i know that part of the joke is that i know i like some indie! (which is not the same as being indie.)

[identity profile] cis.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
haha I wondered who would be the first to call remioromen the japanese snow patrol! <3

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
apropos has anyone seen or got Snow Patrol's 'The Trip' compilation? The tracklisting is actually, genuinely fantastic.

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw it in t'shops when it first came out. I didn't inspect it closely at the time but yes, the track list for the first disc looks alright (despite the presence of Four Tet in the middle).

Don't fancy the look of CD2 at all, although I am keen to hear some Hot Chip (I haven't checked out that mp3 you offered on yr LJ yet).

[identity profile] cis.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
yes! i got it off the styowdent paper last year, it looked v good as I recall but I don't think I listened to it above once.

[identity profile] dorsalstop.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ouch, was that so obvious? I toyed with a reference to that "Everything sounds like Coldplay now" song, and then saying "Even Japanese people!", but Snow Patrol.. well, it just SOUNDS like it, doesn't it?

Also: should I keep you up to date on the Partysquad's chart placing in the NL, Tom? ;-)

(Also: yes, Morningwood is aces. And so is Miranda. Have given up on trying to understand Hawley love)

[identity profile] dorsalstop.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
(You all knew I was *that* Dutch bloke with the unpr0nouncable name, right? :)

[identity profile] cis.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
no diss intended, dude, it really does! I love it tho because, er, Patrick McNally's blurb == about me. (it's the current no.3 in japan off the back of use in a very very sad drama.)

The Hawley thing is completely incomprehensible, innit?

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
that would be Mitch Benn's "Everything Sounds Like Coldplay"

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Where's Winner Stays On, anyway? I want my Lambert fix.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Hawley!

[identity profile] umlauts.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
You are all mentalists for not liking "Analogue". It's bloody Max Martin!

[identity profile] jel-bugle.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Nightwish rule!! I love female fronted euro-goth meatl. It's the now sound. Get with the programme.

They cover "Walking in the air" and have songs about LOTR.

[identity profile] umlauts.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but "Sleeping Sun" is not great. It's no "I Wish I Had An Angel", that's for sure.

[identity profile] jel-bugle.livejournal.com 2006-01-24 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, I guess, but it's still probably better than Lanegan and her out of belle and sebastian. I read the open letter to the ex-singer of Nightwish from the rest of the band, harsh.
