It's the penultimate Heat of 2006! I can't do maths it transpires (or rather 'didn't think about needing to do any maths when I started this') so we will also actually have a post-heat-6 poll of the nearly-rans to get the numbers up to 40 but we're getting there.

The threatening strings, especially on the hook (I know you're gonna like it (I know) so tell me how you want it (tell me)) and the occasional stutters into rapid danciness (I don't want your innocence, I don't want you to stutter, I don't want a commitment and I don't want you to suffer) and the swoops of prettiness from Christina (boy I got my eyes on you, tell me what you wanna do, I can picture you in my room until the morning) all punctuated by that room-silencing chorus. Press Play had some of the most amazing dramatic pop on it I've ever heard. Also what kind of an arsehole do I feel like that I didn't nominate Thought You Said or Last Night? Aaaargh.

This isn't going to win anything but I love it very, very much- beautiful, rippling power-pop with a fine sense of gothic melodrama (twenty yeeeeears, sinking slowly) and an intense catchiness and wall-of-sound Xenomania-at-their peak kinesis and cleverness to its instrumentation. Emilie has since decided to become a burlesque artist who only performs her lamer songs, which is a bit of a shame but that's being a mentally ill classical violinist accidentally making a pop record for you-


The best bit is the bit that goes to tell the truth all of my songs/are pretty much the fucking same/I'm not a fairy/but I need more than this life so I became/this creature representing more to you than just another girl/and if I had the chance to change my mind I wouldn't for the woooooorld but actually it is all good in context. It is very goth but then so is Kate Bush.

The you said I did you wrong, you did me wrong and we was both at fault and of course you lost me with your alibis and all of your talking and most important I just questioned myself bit made my whole heart explode out my mouth on Monday whilst I was flicking through my music collection. Seriously a fucking masterpiece; Diddy's ability to grotesquely self-analyse whilst absurdly posturing is something you have to be Diddy already to carry off but works so fucking well it's insane.
