Time for another heat and CRIKEY is this one bringing the hits. When I was typing out the poll I found myself wincing every other entry for the last 20 or so as I realised how many MONSTROUS STORMERS there were here; I think this one will probably be very tight.
[The last one has produced a final-qualifying-place tie, so I will do another post about that in a minute innit]
1. You get SIX TICKS, use them wisely.
2. The six top-polling songs go through to the 2006 final.
3. Pick up an extra tick for next round simply by telling us what the best thing you hadn't heard before but listened to au cause des comments here was. You don't have to tick it, just say what it was! Easy.
As there are bank holidays a-happening, this poll will stay open until LUNCHTIME WEDNESDAY 27th APRIL GMT.
[Also coming up for next week: TERRIBLE COMPILATIONS for EVERY OCCASION and a POLL ABOUT SUCH for every day the guvmint give us off werk, woohoo! So even if you can't remember 2006, you'll have something to tick if you're in front of a computer- they won't be time-sensitive so if you're not you can go back and do it later. ANYWAY, back to the job at hand...]
People with extra ticks this round:
lockedintheatti,
justfanoe,
koganbot and
credoimprobus. Y'all are gonna need 'em.

[Poll #1732387]
Oh GOD
Date: 2011-04-21 12:49 pm (UTC)Justin/T.I.- My Love
Ridiculously pretty, seething beds of synth writhing beneath heartfelt boyband vocals, a real triumph of Timbaland's imperial phase in pop.
The Spinto Band- Oh Mandy (http://youtu.be/y-qCuYEUGug) (not sure if that's the official video, I assume so- either way it's rly delightful)
Bewitching and very beguiling little bit of folkpop here that stuck much much more than I ever thought it would. Building into frenzied choruses with a thrum and pace that belies the gentle keening of the vocals.
Emilie Autumn- Opheliac (http://youtu.be/Whr5ulaDBCE)
The fact she's been touring this since 2006 is RIDICULOUS but it is also a harpsichord monster of ridiculous gothpop, all dramatic sighs and drippy sleeves and flashes of something genuinely threatening; the you know the gamesIplayandthewordsIsaywhenI WANT MY OWN WAY you know the liesitellwhenyou'regoingthroughhellandIsayIcan'tstay you know how hard it can be to keep believing in me when everything and everyone becomes my enemy and friend there's nothing more you can do I'm gonna blame it on you bit has always sounded like what might have happened if Girls Aloud had extrapolated from Graffiti My Soul instead of making Models, which may be a good thing or not according to your personal opinion. (altho tbh I don't think even I'm going to tick it in this heat and there's awesome synthpop Swallow coming up later anyway but I thought you might like to hear it so here it is for your consideration etc. etc. etc.)
Hot Chip- Over & Over
THE JOY OF REPETITION REALLY IS IN YOU
Sharam - PATT (Party All The Time) (http://youtu.be/d3H0d_0pqOI)
MY GIRL WANTS TO -oh god, it feels mental ticking such a sample-reliant track at this point but whoa it is one of my favourite things, complete bouncy joy.
Fedde Le Grand- Put Your Hands Up For Detroit
I like how this is easily mishearable as a polite tourist board campaign- A LOVELY CITY
Amy Winehouse- Rehab
Good god does this even need pointing out? The sheer amount of play it still gets does it more harm than it should but that shouldn't tarnish how great it sounded then. Not the most awesome single off the album (You Know I'm No Good is my favourite but I have the feeling that's a 2007 charter) and doesn't quite have the emotional power of something like Love Is A Losing Game but it was this opening scene that gave the weight to their sucker punches.
Margaret Berger- Robot Song (http://youtu.be/6Y0HRfEDviQ)
I love love loved this at the time and still do- bloops and blips and joyous little electro-burbling in the verses as Margaret works out how to deal with her parents disapproving of her new boyfriend, then spacy gorgeousness with a carefully subtle irony you're the only one who makes me feel a thing.
All Saints- Rocksteady (http://youtu.be/KeL_oudWlDQ)
UPBEAT, CLASSY UK POP'N'B STONKER ALERT. I listened to this 24396459065 times and still it did not sell well. :(
Margaret Berger- Samantha (http://youtu.be/hErXfNM8Zoo)
So, so, so pretty and full of longing and care for the eponymous friend.
Nelly Furtado- Say It Right
This was really the point when, as I was making the poll, I started mentally howling 'FOR FUCK'S SAKE' at the list. This is so unbelievably beautiful, poised and steady and murmured, quiet and sad and determined. Very, very strong and wise and delicate, I have listened to it millions of times. Heartbreaking and with such a well-pitched vocal it almost falls into that unearthly, too good category of something like Nothing Compares 2 U.
Hi-Tack- Say Say Say (Waiting 4U) (http://youtu.be/9RVjSNyKzwc)
Again, sample-reliant but so perfectly transformed into a mesmerisingly lonely trance song. Does the thing that dance music does best, when euphoria is combined with desperation. SO MUCH LOVE.
Justin- Sexyback
OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE.

Date: 2011-04-21 12:54 pm (UTC)Gratuitous half-OT side rep
Date: 2011-04-21 02:39 pm (UTC)(I <3 Samantha so much. Excellent video, as well!)
Re: Oh GOD
Date: 2011-04-21 03:00 pm (UTC)(Love that All Saints too, though I don't have a spare tick for it (woe); the whole album was really enjoyable, in fact.)

Date: 2011-04-21 01:09 pm (UTC)I apologise to myself for making it a very difficult round to pick from.
(I only didn't tick SexyBack as I assume it will sail through...)
Well, THAT'S painful
Date: 2011-04-21 01:21 pm (UTC)(THANK GOD the poll cut off where it did, though; I realised yesterday that we were likely to get 3 x Ne-Yo in the same poll, as ALL THREE SINGLES start with an S, dear god.)
Just gonna say about My Love:
Date: 2011-04-21 01:34 pm (UTC)(...well, okay, so it splits that title with 1 Thing and Ellen Allien/Apparat's Do Not Break, for me, but POINT STILL STANDS.)
Most powerful first impression of the decade, hands down; I was so ridiculously blown away by it from the very first seconds the first time I heard it.
if I told you you were beautiful, would you date me on the regular?
Date: 2011-04-25 08:45 am (UTC)Surely the prototype from which Ice Box was cloned. Ice Box may be even better but don't let that detract from what's going on here.
And a few underdog reps
Date: 2011-04-21 02:14 pm (UTC)Deceptively light touch, subtle, spine-tingling melody; plain EXQUISITE. That she makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up kills me every time.
So Amazin' = shamefully underrated album.
Genuinely affecting.
And OSHI how did I miss this on my first runthrough of the list D:
Re: And a few underdog reps
Date: 2011-04-22 06:20 pm (UTC)so many tunes of the decade
Date: 2011-04-21 02:31 pm (UTC)This is my tune of the decade. There's a real video but it's vevo but no matter because the live version is even better - weezy and robin complement each other so well - their timing is so tight and the line "put your hands up" is put in to much better use here.
one more fror me
Date: 2011-04-21 02:40 pm (UTC)Come to get me when the stars die
Date: 2011-04-22 05:32 am (UTC)Kind of a gag, Margaret Berger singing hopeless teen love as if for a robot, my dad won't understand, and then somehow a shift into such beauty that this song is as poignant as any song of forbidden love ever.
"Basically, this is a song I wrote about a guy who cheated on me and shouldn't have because I write songs."
Basically, this is a song she wrote about a guy who cheated on her and shouldn't have because she writes songs.
Further proof that Scott Storch owned 2006 (but I'm out of ticks):

Date: 2011-04-22 11:45 am (UTC)Weird thing is I've never really liked any other All American Rejects songs, but the melody on this one is great and it just keeps driving on and on.
Come on, you may hate Paris Hilton, but this is a really great pop song. I was just reflecting that the Paris album has held up shockingly well, and this is the best song. No idea what she was thinking with that bizarre and creepy music video though.

Date: 2011-04-25 08:36 am (UTC)I was fourteenthey didn't suck and the pop finesse of the Fray without all the taudry Grey's Anatomy soundtrack bullshit. I am very pro-bands whose modus operandi appears to be to largely attempt to be fairly normal expressing FEELINGS about the stresses of this action.(Also this >>>>>>>>>>> Dirty Little Secret, contrary to contemporary and current airplay GODAMMIT)
