what a terrible choice. Biffy Clyro and all their songs can fvck right off. Especially the one about talking to satan and god.

Biffy Clyro are surely an urgent case for JUDGE POPP y/y?

THE CASE, M'LUD:
1) Busted breaking up
2) now this
3) general loitering in the chart lobby

I recommend to the jury that Rebecca joins a band with Matt and James from the aforementioned.

Feel vague regret that if I'd 'got behind' the CATM thing a bit more, having been the first print hack to write about it, I might have been invited to take part and could have fulfilled, in the cheatiest way possible, a niggling lifelong ambition of being on a Top 40 hit.

And obviously Surfin Bird is any good at all, in fact it's very good at all in most circs, but am I not correct in thinking the impetus here is the ever-horrible Family Guy?

Yes, this was what made me feel extremely ambiguous about ticking it, even though it is evidently Quite Good Indeed.

Altho I do find it v hard not to mentally sing the Birdseye Chicken version, when thinking of it.

I didn't tick it because I don't tick re-entries (except when I do); but you shouldn't think my DON'T LIKE ANY refers to it.

Here are the Rivingtons:

The Trashmen song has never been in the UK Top 40 before this week, so technically ticking it wouldn't breach your rule.

In checking this, I discovered the nearest was a cover of The Beatles' "Golden Slumbers" & "Carry That Weight" in 1969 by a band called Trash, which peaked at #35.

Hmmm. I guess it was in the Top 100 though. It still feels like a... revival. Which of course makes it part of modern-day pop, grumble grumble. I still feel justified in not ticking it. Maybe if the Trashmen were still a viable act... I felt I was right to tick "99 Problems" on the heels of Glastonbury, but this one doesn't feel right. And if the Glee Cast ever cover "Surfin' Bird" I suppose I'll have to blurb it.

Ticked all of these (haf not actually heard "X-Mas" but tis the season, so free pass; if it's actually a Gary Jules or Hurts-like misery fest, do say and I'll untick).

We have actually had Biffy before, all the way back in Week #3 (http://community.livejournal.com/poptimists/758613.html). I was the only one to tick it then, mainly because it's not only a daft title but they actually managed to shoehorn said title into the lyric... just. There are two big problems with the Matt Cardigan version: the change of title and the key change (Note to S. Cowell: can we have an X Factor finalists/winner's song that forgos the key change just once plsthks?). But he makes a decent fist of it otherwise. I certainly won't turn it off when it next comes on the radio.
