Time for ever-so-slightly overdue heat #7!

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you told us all your new favourite (and why) from the last heat. Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do it for five or more heats and get an extra nomination for 2006 (unless I think of something else to do in 2006).

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote.

[Poll #1538830]

Extra ticks this heat go to [livejournal.com profile] laschifosavita, [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot, [livejournal.com profile] jeff_worrell and [livejournal.com profile] meserach.

Ok so uh... what?

There are like a bunch of different dance remixes of this on Spotify.... kids TV theme or whatever this is? But what are we actually meant to be voting for?

goths, scandinavians

Depeche Mode have disabled embedding but Precious (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts2DXY0zfLs) is one of my favourite songs by them. And y'know, that's quite a high-scoring league for me. It's got the right mix of delicacy and absurd gothic melodrama and actual catchiness to be totally canon comfort-pop.

Also, I don't know if this is the original version or the slightly rub-ed up version that was on the UK release but 'Should Have Known' is BRILLIANT. Robyn does sulky and wronged like no other:

Also the Roll Deep is brilliant but I have to do some work & can't listen to YouTube on my werk PC so someone else will have to dig that out.

I don't usually spit on tracks like these

Here's "Shake A Leg," my favorite of the two Roll Deeps ("Avenue" gets a bit overwhelmed by the sample, this one's got a more intricate interdance); official vid is nonembeddable, so here's a bare one:

Aly & AJ "Rush"; still my favorite song of theirs. This is what I wrote about Aly & AJ on my 2006 Jackin' Pop ballot:

Aly & AJ are a couple of Darwin-shunning home-schooled evangelical Christian teenagers who act and record for Disney and sing songs urging us to throw ourselves into life, into the unknown, as the crucial condition of our expressing ourselves; and they sing other songs about their terror of life, their difficulty in growing up while being racked with fear, afraid of strangers, helpless in the face of bullies. It's as if every Aly & AJ song has an equal and opposite Aly & AJ song. Minds in motion. Into your head, into your mind, out of your soul, race through your veins, you can't escape, you can't escape. Accidentally like Iggy Stooge. Desperately wanting to be touched, afraid to be touched. Raw power got a healing hand; raw power can destroy a man. Can you feel it, can you feel it, rushin' through your head, rushin' through your head, can you feel it, can you feel it? Raw power is a guaranteed O.D. Raw power is a laughin' at you and me. Can you feel it? Can you feel it? It took me two seconds, after seeing that there was an Artist Of The Year category, to know that Aly & AJ were it. Both of us broken, caught in a moment, we lived and we loved, and we hurt and we jumped, yeah.

Deana Carter "The Girl You Left Me For," streamed on MySpace. As brightly colored a pop track as country's ever produced, Deana takes her cute assertive voice and gets aggressively, almost psychotically self-abnegating. (The album is genuinely assertive, and you can stream it in its entirety from the link: finding herself tossed on her butt by the major labels, she reimagines her music and tentatively tries to reimagine what L.A. country girls like her can be.)

I'm not sure if that is the lyric? But I want it to be, something about that has captured my heart completely. So, thank you!

That is definitely the lyric.

Aly & AJ are very poignant. Here's another thing I wrote about them (they show up about two-thirds of the way through the piece):

The Rules of the Game #20: Fleshy women, slimy men, smart teens.

Pretty much ditto for me, and it's certainly my favourite remix or mashup of the decade by miles, and I think I prefer it to the original. It builds beautifully from the glitchy bits in the verse to the glorious explosion of electronic colour over the chorus.

Embedding disabled but here's a link to a fan-made video:

MY SUMMER JAM OF '05:

Coasts effortlessly along on its sunkissed groove, and hasn't lessened one bit in half a decade. This was the tune that finally made me really pay attention to Snoop. And let's not forget JT's contribution!

And some chart bosh

Deep Dish: the really awesome version is the Paul van Dyk remix, but the original is also lovely (and great video!):

Only four genuine omissions, I think, which may well be the most complete list yet.

A number of things are on twice where I was unsure what version was meant. I gave up with Schnappi and the elevnfinity versions of that that seem to exist.

THE MISSING:
JME - Serious
Brie Larson - She Said
DJ Earworm - Since U Been Gahan (Rex The Dog mashup)
Deana Carter - The Girl You Left Me For

A NOTE:

Does anyone other than me actually use these? I'll end up putting them together anyway for my own use, but I'm nonetheless curious.
