i: On arrival in Australia from Italy in 1937, her family changed their name from Ropschitz to Roxon at her suggestion
ii: It was a good choice -- tho Roxov would have been better! -- bcz she subsequently authored the first-ever Rock Encyclopedia, published by Grosset & Dunlap in late 1969
iii: she was a first-generation contributor of some significance to the Women's Movement

i have never read the encycylopedia, tho [livejournal.com profile] koganbot has: (iii) is to me yet more reason why he should embark on a project reading the history of post civil rights american feminism against his tradition of post-dylan girls -- NONE BUT HE CAN PULL THIS OFF

Er, I suppose I also need to read more of Lillian Roxon's Rock Encyclopedia, which I've owned for almost thirty years but only dip into occasionally. I was put off by stuff like the first half of her Hendrix entry being how shocking it must've been for the moms of America to see Jimi opening for the Monkees, as Jimi licked and caressed his guitar and rubbed it between his thighs. Not much on the actual content of the music, though she mentioned that the music was his strong suit but that, according to Clapton, Jimi only pushed the music when he sensed that's what the audience wanted. She was more a reporter than a critic, really.

I have a feeling I'd have more fun reading Germaine Greer.

Didn't realize Roxon was born eleven years before Christgau.
