This seems an opportune moment to plug Ishkur's Electronic Music Guide, which is an excellent survey of the history and various genres, subgenres, sub-sub-genres, and stuff you'd swear he made up, of the electronic music scene.

One person's opinion of course, but crucially it is an opinion backed up by entertaininr udeness, illustrative sound clips and BIG SHINY BUTTONS.
