The Pussycat Dolls emerge the victors from the Heat #3 run-off; joining them in the next round are Madge, Rachel, Gwen, Ciara and...dudes are you lot doing this on purpose? An Indie run-off is at the end of today's heat. Go forth and tick!

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you told us all your new favourite (and why) from the last heat. Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do it for five or more heats and get an extra nomination for 2006 (unless I think of something else to do in 2006).

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote.

[Poll #1532644]

Extra ticks this heat go to [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus, [livejournal.com profile] mesearch, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot and me.

Feist's version of Inside and Out is probably my favourite thing she's done.

Also, I think 'Living for the Weekend' is a really great track. I can't offer the eloquent defence some put forward for 'Hard to Beat' last round, only say that I prefer this one to that one.

Tales From Turnpike House = stunning return to form for the indie pop veterans. This track stopped me in my tracks and left me open mouthed when I first heard it.

Turnpike is definitely the album that got me back into SE, but in retrospect all of their 00s work is great. Can't believe their last proper album was 5 years ago though! Surely due a new one soon...

I imagine "L.O.V.E." has some Poptimists appeal, but despite having nominated it I have to insist that all Ashlee ticks go toward "La La." I've written about it extensively recently here (http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/archives/2009/12/the_50_worst_so_35.php). [livejournal.com profile] koganbot recently wrote about it as well (http://koganbot.livejournal.com/209983.html).

Miranda Lambert "Kerosene": Love doesn't go my way, so I blow everything up. Incendiary.

Ashlee Simpson "La La": I like it better when it hurts.

What I wrote a couple of days ago about "Love Me For Me" (which we did last year) and "La La":

The overriding issue for the teenpop girls is "Who am I?" not "am I hot for you, are you hot for me?" So when the songs are about hotness and sex and romance the underlying question is actually, "Will he love me for me"?... Ashlee's two best songs, "La La" and "Love Me For Me," are raucous romance-sex comedies of manners; but the break in "La La" goes, "I feel safe with you/I can be myself tonight/It's all right with you/'Cause you hold my secrets tight," this in a song that is all about SEXUAL PLAY ACTING AND ROLE PLAYING in which she says she likes it better when it hurts and she promises to come back and beat you up. So being accepted for being herself means being accepted for any shit she throws and any role she could conceivably adopt as an experiment, now or in the future. (And the critical thing for Ashlee age 19 was that she didn't really believe that anyone would ever accept her, either her personality or her music.) But, though "La La" is great, it's really not very sexy; at least I don't think so. As far as what it sounds like, it's a Joan Jett leader-of-the-gang-thing, and that's how it's presented in the video, "You make me wanna la-la" being a group shout to the world, not an intimate encounter.

"Love Me For Me" is hilarious and as well-written as any lyrics I've heard ever, sets out the issues in four lines and then starts playing with you, and it is sexy, but the prime moment comes two-thirds through where she lets out a wild "Meow," which is more domineering than kittenish; and she ends up, "And when you're crawling over broken glass to get to me/That's when I'll let you stay."

Hmmmm. I incorrectly make it seem as if "domineering" and "kittenish" are somehow incompatible.

I remember once writing that Mick Jagger couldn't have actually had any hands-on experience with Siamese cats (he thought they were the sweetest little pets in the world).

I have only ticked two things here:
1. Lighters Up, which is amazing.
2. Man I Used To Be, which is SOME FUNKY SH1T. I once spent an entire two-week holiday attempting to catch it on German MTV.

DUDE WHAT I HAVE LITERALLY HALF OF MY TEN IN THIS HEAT, NOT RIGHT

D:

(Remaining two ticks will be between La La, La Tortura & Let Me Love You; anyone wanna convince me which ones? Of course keep in mind that the last of those three has the benefit of my MASSIVE NE-YO BIAS on its side, so it might be a hard option to dislodge...)

And a massive rep post, then

In order:

-ONE FOR THE METAL CROWD: the amazing (AMAZING) debut single of what's become one of Finland's premiere metal bands:

(On later albums they've really worn their debt to Devin Townsend on their sleeve, but on the first one it was still pretty well hidden.)

-And the last part of my shameless promotion of Poetica:

Incidentally, this was in the very first post I made to this comm three years ago (after having lurked for two years, heh)! Ah, memories.

-CLASSIC DUBSTEP of the really shows its d'n'b roots type; as already asserted back in the nominations post, SUPER SUPER SUPER BANGING, j. effing christ. Like a pure shot of bass-heavy adrenaline!

-C'MON PEOPLE LET'S SEND BOOKA SHADE THROUGH (it's close enough to qualifying as is, after all!):

Yeah, I'd prefer to see Mandarine Girl (or Kate) go through than yet another GA song, though I do like "Long Hot Summer" a fair bit.

And BLARGH the copy of the Milton Road remix I found on blip.fm has since disappeared off the face of the net, so instead here's: a) a sample (unusually well representative a one, even!) on amazong; b) a full (streamable & downloadable) upload on divshare. Give this little obscure gem a chance: it is LOVELY, all delicately plinky and twitchy. Here's part of my description of it from my '05 top list, which unlike most of my essentially sucky music writing from that time is still SPOT ON:

It starts out as nothing but a stripped-down guitar strum rhythm and a simple piano line, and then as it progresses it piles on clanky drum patterns and strings and yet more drum patterns and before you know it it's one big glorious cacaphonous mess.

Not likely to get it more ticks (not with as poorly as it's doing so far, heh), but I pretty much feel compelled to:

Okay, yeah, both Mario's performance and the production leave a bit to be desired -- but the songwriting is UNIMPEACHABLE. Although I obviously didn't know it yet, this was the moment I fell in love with Ne-Yo (like ROCKS FALLING FROM THE SKY).

I'm honestly used to being the only one that loves it; I was cheerfully ignoring general critical opinion of it even back in '05, after all!

(I keep thinking what it might've been like if it'd had the production of, say, So Sick -- a tiny bit faster, a little more life and colour. MISSED OPPORTUNITY. :( Of course, most peeps underrated So Sick at the time it came out as well, ha...)
