Haiti Helpers still at #1, 'We Are The World' only manages #50.

[Poll #1528974]

Brits watch: As well as Flo & Dizz's #2 spot, all five of Lady Gaga's top 100 entries have moved up a dozen or so places, Jay-Z and Alicia are back in the top 20, 'The Fear' goes from #173 to #89 and 'Fight For This Love' scraps into the top 40. Lifetime achiever Robbie Williams doesn't do too well in the singles but his greatest hits collection climbs 63 places and his new album goes back in the top 10.

Dancing: Dudes, POPTIMISM is on Friday. Just sayin' like.

Florence/Dizzee Rascal "You Got The Dirtee Love": "Dirtee Cash" was my favorite Dizzee single from last year, and this ups the excitement from that, Dizzee more dynamic and driving than when ensconced in the "Cash" upbeat arrangement, and this drive helps propel a Florence vocal that had been dead lead on her album. Let's hear it for mashups and medleys, hurrah. YOU GOT THE TICK.

Lemar "The Way Love Goes": The AutoTune polishes and brightens what already was a nice melody; for the first couple of minutes we're heading sweetly to Ticksville, but eventually the electrobrightness can't compensate for the cumulative drag of a doggedly dull voice. NO TICK.

Courteeners "You Overdid It Doll": Strong guitar strum, pretty tune, heavy, dark singing, and smug words, the singer glad to tell the woman that she's running herself to ruin with her obsessive pleasure. Ugly. NO TICK.

Chris Brown "Crawl": "And now I can't reach your face." Yes, Chris, that's what restraining orders are about. "Love, can't you see my hand?" The man doesn't have a clue. NO TICK.

Leona Lewis "I Got You": Lotsa vocal pieces and parts, none overplayed, but that's the problem: no exuberance inhabits this versatility, no melismas or swoops threaten to run free. NO TICK.

Er, I shouldn't imply that I've heard the Florence album in its entirety, which I haven't. I was trying to avoid using the phrase "Florence's original version," since Florence didn't do the original version of "You Got The Love." (I believe the original is by the Source ft. Candi Staton.)

Not forgetting that Joss Stone covered it (and much better) mere nanoseconds before Fat Em and then Jamie out of The xx remixed/covered Em and ... enough already. I'm officially calling OVERKILL.

Joss Stone, though I don't know which version she's covering:

To be honest, I'm kind of meh about the original Source & Candi Staton version (as opposed to the original original which I can't find in a quick google search and may not ever have been for sale anywhere, see below). Which isn't to say that Staton doesn't have an excellent voice:

the original Source ft Candi Station track is a mashup of two other songs

It seems as if the original original Candi Staton track had never been released as a record, and she'd forgotten it had existed:

Wikipedia:
The original version is a soul/disco/gospel track (released in the UK by streetwave in 1986) written by Anthony B. Stephens, Arnecia Michelle Harris and John Bellamy. It featured an a cappella version utilised by Paul Simpson when he combined this with the backing track to the Adeva song "Musical Freedom (You've got the Love) in 1989. The most well known house mix by DJ Eren was released in 1991 and layered the vocal track over an instrumental version of the Frankie Knuckles/Jamie Principle house song "Your Love" itself a stripped down version of the italo-disco track Feels Good (Carrots and Beets) by Electra featuring Tara Butler. The original Candi Staton track had been recorded for a video-only 1980s documentary about an obese man who was trying to lose weight. When approached by The Source, Candi said she couldn't remember her having recorded a song called "You Got the Love". It was only later when she realised she had performed the song years earlier for the documentary. The producers of the video had selected the song for her to sing, but as they had no funds to pay her, they donated half of the copyright and publishing to Candi.

The DJ Eren track was originally released in 1991, and reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart. It was remixed and re-issued in 1997, this time reaching number 3, the song's highest position, and then re-issued again in 2006 with new mixes by Now Voyager and the Shapeshifters, reaching number 7. The 2006 mix also featured more lyrics than the first two versions.

The "Now Voyager mix" (released in 1996 and 1997) of the track was featured in the final moments of the Sex and the City series finale in 2004. The track's new mixes and the inclusion of the track in the show is one factor of its 2006 reissue. The Original Bootleg Radio Mix of the track was also featured in the film Layer Cake in the club where Sidney talks to XXXX as he looks on at Sidney's girlfriend.

The song has a clear Christian message: Staton talks of giving up on God, only to discover that he has "got the love I need to see me through", and that "the Saviour's love is real". The theme behind the song is one of upliftment and empowerment.

Today has been very educational for me. I honestly don't remember if I heard this, though I can't imagine I didn't, since I remember the band title, and went Top 40 in the USA:

surely, overkill had been reached when they used it in Gavin and Stacey on New Year's Day. esp after it had been on every trailed over the xmo period
