A tough opener for the year saw Amerie, Girls Aloud, Robyn and Maximo Park all squeeze through. However t.A.T.u and the Veronicas tied for 5th place! Vote in the tie-breaker below.

Next up we have LOTS of indie. Oh dear...

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you told us all your new favourite (and why) from the last heat. Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do it for five or more heats and get an extra nomination for 2006 (unless I think of something else to do in 2006).

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Tuesday lunchtime to vote.

[Poll #1527537]

Extra ticks this heat go to [livejournal.com profile] justfanoe, [livejournal.com profile] mesearch, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot and me.

LCD Soundsystem

I speak as someone largely ignorant of LCD Soundsystem outside of their appearances in this process.

I have to ask: Is the way the vocalist enunciates words a bug or a feature? Because gods it's making me a little crazy. Although it kinda works here with the tracks propulsive bass - kinda makes me think of a Jagger-like strutting frontman. Are they like that live? It would be a lot more tolerable as an affectation if it was part of a whole performance.

I have the same question myself. I guess the answer is that it's both a bug and a feature. It lands too much on the "mediocrity" side of the "mediocrity/artist" divide for me - relevant similar vocalists who at their best get their bugs over to the "artist" side would be Lou Reed, Jonathan Richman, Mark E. Smith, H.P. Baxxter. They're willing to be better than their listeners, whereas James Murphy doesn't get there for me. But then, though I've got one of the LCD Soundsystem albs, I've not given the band a chance to win me over. So someone else will be able to give you a better answer than I can, and maybe tell me where to hear the art.
