Owl City are hooting away at the top spot, Glee are up to #3 though some people still aren't sure whether they like the Journey version (#7) better - personally I think this version wins.

[Poll #1516269]

Glee Watch: we're up to eight top 100 entries now (the extra ones being 'Mercy', 'Bust Your Windows' and 'Push It'). Lady Gaga can only muster five top 100 entries - must try harder, Stephanie.

Poll reminder: voting closes tomorrow lunchtime in Heat #6 of 2004 which is still wide open at the moment (Hint: vote for Jamelia)!

Pop reminder: POPTIMISM on Friday! Bring a few records with you and you might get a turn on the decks!

Jay Paul on one record is a bit like the ultimate question of life the universe and everything and the answer to same being known at the same time. Why hasn't the universe vanished and been replaced by something equally inexplicable? (Or maybe it has! - cf. Moggy's first post above)

(Or maybe Lil Jon is holding the structure of the universe together by sheer crunkpower alone!!!)

No, the universe doesn't turn outside out and reconfigure until the remix that features Sean Paul of the YoungBloodZ.

We should point out for all you literalists that I think if you brought actual RECORDS i.e. vinyl thingies to Poptimism we couldn't actually play 'em.

This week I was just a hair away from "DON'T LIKE ANY."

Example "Won't Go Quietly": I'm trying to get a bead on this. Sounds like Neil Tennant forced into some Britpop dance amalgam, to half-assed effect. On Wiki I discover that the guy is a rapper. Huh? [Goes to back catalogue.] Yeah, OK, and there's force to him, when he raps, and a willingness to throw all sorts of electric stuff at us. And a fear of women. Makes him the U.K. 3OH!3, perhaps? --I won't really know that I think until I hear Lex's opinion. (Come back, Lex.) He'll hate this, right? Enough of an earworm for a BORDERLINE TICK.

Girls Can't Catch "Echo": The girls can't sing, either. Hah ha ha. [Results 1 - 10 of about 10,700 for "girls can't catch" "girls can't sing". (0.30 seconds)] They had a very good song last time that they gamely pushed aross. This one relies more on the arrangement, which runs several circles without taking us beyond blah. NO TICK.

Jay Sean, Sean Paul, Lil Jon "Do You Remember": Goo, w/ shouts and DJ. NO TICK.

Glee Cast "Take A Bow": Presumably the singer's in character, a dutiful student, hits notes, adds touches, enunciates the lyrics, delivers neither self nor song. NO TICK.

For those of you who've somehow missed the other fifty times I've linked it, I love this not-always-in-tune version that nonetheless is perfect in its fragile, delicate hatred:

Pitbull ft. Akon "Shut It Down": Aggressive, effective as usual, but it's time for this guy to go from "effective" to "actually interesting." BORDERLINE NONTICK.

I won't really know that I think until I hear Lex's opinion.

Cogito lex ergo sum.

Actually, I meant to say "I won't really know what I think until I hear Lex's opinion."

Rethinking a couple of these: the Example track now sounds wooden and the worm has long left the ear. So I'd take back my tick but I've decided not to rewrite my history.

Having belatedly figured out that Lea Michele is something special as a singer, I think that... on "Take A Bow," same as before: this performance is far too studied and clear, when it needed to ache and scratch.
