POP NEPOTISM WATCH: just noticed Ke$ha is in the 'I Kissed A Grill' video.

In other news, last night I was falling asleep in front of 4Music and was confronted by an advert telling me that Ronan Keating was insisting I voted for Magic FM's greatest love songs ever. Aside from the fact I feel this sort of commanding stance seems a bit out of character for the mild-mannered Mr Keating (whose only actual role in the ad appeared to be a very much younger version of his be-curtained self fading wistfully into the aether) this led to some sleepy pondering on my part.

-What makes something a love song? Lots of songs are about lust or heartbreak but I would hazard a guess that there are a far fewer songs about love than things that are ...well, not exactly tertiary factors but more small parts of love, which I guess is due to their generally personal nature. The only exception I can think of to this is 'The Power Of Love.' (nb: I do not think this is a bad thing)

-Do songs about other sorts of love count? Like friendly love or divine love? (eg: 'You Got The Love' is about god y/y?)

-Are the only good "love songs" power ballads?

Obviously there's the canonical "songs got wrong" like 'Nothing Compares 2U' and 'Angels' that inevitably rank highly in these things (although as I've said elsewhere before, I'm increasingly of the opinion that it's whatever you think it is, etc.) but then love songs or what can get classified as such tends to be personal, to a large extent; there's a million "and I lost contact with [X] but our song will always be 'Firestarter' by the Prodigy so can you play that for me" radio phone-in stories.

I have a very faint memory of having posted something along these lines before but can't work out how to find it if I did.

A lot of songs "about love" turn out to be meta-love-songs, like "L.O.V.E. Love" by Al Green, and Wings' "Silly Love Songs"

Which Power Of Love???

Power ballads make good love songs because they dramatise an element of self-sacrifice and loss of caution - i.e. to do a power ballad effectively you can't be afraid of looking like a dick.
