So ten songs in the P&J top 30 made the Poptimists top 30. I was expecting fewer!

P&J predictions thread, which only two of us bothered to post on.

It's no great feat making these predictions nowadays, but anyway, here's how I did. Thought the battle for singles would be between "My Girls" (finished 3rd) (which I've listened to maybe twice) and actual winner "Empire State Of Mind" (which I don't think is all that good, though I love the song it samples), but I expected "My Girls" to win. Didn't give "1901" much more attention than I gave "My Girls," ended up deleting it from my computer. Tell me why I'm wrong, or at least say something that will open up the music for me.

Thought "Poker Face" (13th place) would go top five and "Bad Romance" (7th) top ten. Thought "You Belong With Me" would go top ten and I was right, I was right, I was right, though just barely, and I didn't vote for it, though it's easily my favorite of the top ten (not counting "Lust For Life," which I don't recall even hearing of, though for all I know I reviewed it for the Jukebox and then forgot). I'm pleased by "Paparazzi" showing as high as 11, since of the three high-finishing GaGas it's the only one where she doesn't sound too harsh. I thought "The Fear" (21st) would be top ten, which shows how insular I get hanging around you guys. I though Pitbull (tied for 139th-169th) might be unexpectedly strong; now whose enthusiasm here led me to that wrong belief? I wrote that "Boom Boom Pow" (35th), "I Gotta Feeling" (19th), "My Life Would Suck Without You" (tie 54th-57th), "She Wolf" (tie 54th-57th), "Please Don't Leave Me" (tie 170th-223rd), "3" (tie 224th-306th), and "Russian Roulette" (tie 114th-138th) would finish in that order relative to each other, but that I was clueless as to where they'd place in relation to the slew of indie tracks I'd not heard that always show up.

Predicted that "Zero" (6th) would be top ten and "Heads Will Roll" (12th) would be top twenty. Also thought "Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell" (tie 31st-34th) would be top twenty. I daringly said that the Raekwon alb (8th) or single (tie 37th-39th) might make top twenty or might not even be top one hundred.

That's it for singles. I think it's mildly heinous that when the Voice printed my ballot they deleted the designation "(Wallpaper Remix)" from "Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell" and that in the article by Das Racist the word "Wallpaper" did not appear.

Oh yeah, and I thought Kings Of Leon (tie 14th-16th) "might or might not" reach the top 40 and that Muse (way down there) wouldn't. I think I was referring to the single for KOL and album or singles for Muse.

Among albums, I predicted Rosanne Cash (45th) and Miranda Lambert (25th) would barely finish in the money and that Brad Paisley (34th), which I voted for, wouldn't. Hurrah for Brad. (Haven't heard the Cash, which is a prestige item and I didn't much like her last prestige item, but one never knows if one doesn't listen.) Predicted that Animal Collective (1st) would win and that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (4th) would be closer to 5th than to 1st and that I had no idea what the other three indie albums in the top five would be.

Of my faves, I thought Lily (22nd) would be top ten, Rihanna would be somewhere respectable like 25th (was actually a pitiful and blue 125th), The-Dream (16th) would be in the lower end of the top forty, Paisley (34th) and Electrik Red (tied with La Roux and Wild Beasts for 146th-148th in a Lex-provoking finish) would finish out of the money, and everything else would be way farther down. Was right about that last with one pleasing exception, K'naan finishing 35th.

Was ridiculously happy that my ballot and Christgau's had three choices in common, which is the highest we've shared in years (Paisley, K'naan, and "Boom Boom Pow").

Oh yes, and I correctly predicted that the metal album that Moggy likes (18th) would finish in the top forty.

Well done the Mastodon; not v. surprising tho, as you say. 'Crack The Skye' has been colossal and they broke out with 'Blood Mountain.'

Kylesa at 71 surprises me immensely though!

I never saw that predictions thread until now! (Not sure whether I would have posted on it if I had seen it before, but still.) And yeah, the elimination of Wallpaper on my ballot bugged me, too.

Blaqkout #62, Electrik Red #148 (two places below La Roux! Lex must be fuming), Taylor Swift way down at #186 - I don't feel very in tune with this ballot.

Taylor Swift's Fearless got most of its votes last year and the votes didn't carry over (the way the Voice does it, or used to do it, anyway, is to combine votes only when a candidate gets at least half the number of voters in a subsequent year that it got in the year previously; Fearless ended up being one voter short this year, getting eight in comparison to last year's eighteen).

Wow, that would have made a huge difference. Last year it was #54, this year it easily could have been inside the Top 40 with the extra help (I can't find the points distro for Taylor in 2008, though).

"...gets at least half the number of points in a subsequent year....," not voters (at least, that's how I always understood the rule when I was running the polls.) Anyway, much to my surprise (I figured she'd be Top 40 easy), Taylor didn't pull that off this year. (Actually exchanged a couple emails with Glenn McDonald while he was tabulating to make sure.)
