Cast your mind back to murky December and heat #4, where JoJo, Kanye, Kylie, the White Stripes and The Rasmus out-polled the Magnetic Fields, Eminem and Scissor Sisters to get through to the next round.

Some wicked-good bangers to kick off our next heat - it's almost like 2004 never went away!

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you played the investigation game on the previous heat and told us all your new favourite (and why). Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do it for five or more heats and get an extra nomination for 2005.

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote.

[Poll #1513597]

Extra ticks this heat go to [livejournal.com profile] friend_of_tofu, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot, [livejournal.com profile] jeff_worrell, [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus and me.

Dudes this song is all the awesome!

No official video, but the song is here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkdwIiRxgIE).

I also wrote a little thing about it here (http://mrs-leroy-brown.livejournal.com/200851.html).

I'm mixed-up, so what?

Ashlee Simpson in a raucous lunatic comedy of manners, great rolling somersault guitar chords* and detailed, evocative, sustained-for-a-full-song-without-let-up great lyrics, funny funny funny on a subject that's as dead serious as any is for Ashlee (can she actually flourish and be appreciated for herself in a relationship rather than being taken for granted or swept aside?), but the greatest bit is when the song stops cold at 2:15 and she lets out a combined yelp and meow.

Is this the first time we've had two different songs by two different sisters in the same heat (Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle)?

Date: 2010-01-19 01:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrs-leroy-brown.livejournal.com
Whoa, yeah! I totally always forget that Crystal is Loretta's lil sister.

This was a DIFF POLL. I bet I go back and change my mind at least twice!

Yes, I were once an proofreader. Anyhow, "Life without vocal chords" is often the fate of instrumentalists, but "Life without vocal cords" is the predicament of this singer.

I had to vote for Courtney. Sorry other folk.

Aw man, this came on in the grocery store the other week, and for a few minutes life was PERFECT JOY. I felt very faily for having forgotten just how brilliant it was!

'Bedroom Scene' is the really good one. It is the best album I have ever found in a WH Smiths bargain bin for £3, I can tell you that.

(I am v. v. v. v. v. attached to it, actually, cus it sounds like a seaside town and there's a bit at the start of the album that sounds like the multicoloured stationary caravans in Clarach, that you get a glimpse of as you head towards Borth on the train and they look like weird bubbles -HELLO, I AM MAD)

Their 2008 album, 'Everything's The Rush', was more of the same, although, if anything, even better than 'Faded Seaside Glamour'.

You know what's great?

Looking for a Place, that's what. Yes ok a Xenomania vanity project = far less interesting these days but it is BRILLIANT.

I can't find a youtube embed, sadly. BUT IT IS REALLY GOOD; it's got a little bit of that louche classiness of One Touch Sugababes but with a little less virginity.

Looking For A Place >>>>>>>>> anything by Mini Viva

The whistling!

Canned follow-up "Money In My Pocket" is really good too.

Yes, but I had to tick both. I felt wrong and dirty, but it's honestly the way I feel.

They're both great in different ways, but I cant help feeling this distinction split the vote a little too much. I was surprised at how badly Franz are doing, tbh.

No video to be found, but this Predator cut was one of my top 3 songs of 2004. Another dancehall tune on the Red Alert riddim. I'll try and think overnight of some tick-motivational words for y'all. :)

I'd always assumed that remix was poptimists canon, too -- until I found no one nominating it for these polls, ha. Maybe it was one of those tunes that was just big at the time and then sank into oblivion?

I know the next round will be well clogged up with Destiny's Child as is, but nonetheless, MOAR LOVE FOR LOSE MY BREATH DUDES. Not only is it my favourite DC single, its existence is also responsible for one of my favourite remixes of the past decade! <3

(As a bonus, here's another one by a dude whose remixes I was obsessed with in the mid-noughties.)

And here's a rather amusing fan video for lovely Mags Berger's excellent Lifetime Guarantee:

(The official video is here, and well worth a gander if Sony will deign to let you view it.)

Vote Eurobosh

From: [identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com
This plea's probably a little late, but please give a lesson to 2004's finest Eurobosh. Croatian Ivana sings icy vocals over a fantastic hoover-strewn backing, that all builds to a climx featuring a high-speed balalaika solo and a male voice choir. Absolutely fantastic.

i didn't suggest this, but i have to rep for nature boy. Good call whoever put it forward. He was in his late 40s when he recorded this and it has more passion and energy than most other songs in this heat imho.

I felt quite guilt not voting for it. I absolutely love that album, but the choice of singles from it was weird, and this is really something of a weak song.

"Spell", "Supernatural", "Money", "Hiding All Away"...etc. Yes. But honestly, there were so many other great songs in this heat that I didn't feel "Nature Boy" really deserved the tick.
