O-Zone, Snoop & Pharrell and Mylo are all safely through, but three songs tied for 4th and 5th place. See end of the poll for the run-off!

Heat #3 is a monster - containing a small cartoon dog, the loveliest boyband I have ever met (proven by science), a rap collective from Gwent and two warring exes battling it out for your votes. Tick you right back!

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you played the investigation game on the previous heat and told us all your new favourite (and why). Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do it for five or more heats and get an extra nomination for 2005.

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Tuesday lunchtime to vote

[Poll #1497559]

Just pretend the words in brackets aren't there - or if you prefer the remix, pretend that it is (cf. The Streets below). These polls are big enough as it is. Nominating multiple mixes just leads to pointless vote-splitting, as we've already seen.

I'd like to particularly recommend two of my favourite hip hop tracks of the whole decade, Masta Ace's H.O.O.D. (from maybe the album of the year, A Long Hot Summer) and Ghostface's stunning Hollah. This was a very hard call for me - I would like to have given votes to ten tracks here.

Here's "H.O.O.D." (I hope)

And they're twice as good as most boybands by having two, count them, two fully-fledged gaymosexuals.

It would be INSANE if "Galang" didn't go through!

Love it, but think her later stuff's even better. AND she was inspired by Peaches :-)

now i ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Art Brut so very much, but DERE LORD the first alBUM sounds like tinny cr4p these days in comparison to the ACTUAL MONSTER OF RAWK the band have turned into In The Live Arena.

now they are TIGHT and ROCKING and all those other awful things, BUT IN A GOOD WAY.

it appears from The Archive that i may have first seen them 12 June 2004 supporting, oh yes, Ricky Spontane!

Not a big fan of 'chill out'/ 'smooth jazz' music as a rule, but I do love this. So laid back it's almost horizontal, as one commenter on youtube points out.

Why you should tick 'Fit But You Know It'

Cos of the remix on the B-side. Looook: Donaeo! (yes he was making music before 2009!) Kano! Lady Sov! Tinchy Stryder! Skinner is actually the weak link on this version.

i really like the Futureheads remix too (esp. the way they say "donut in hand" and "leave it out")

Sov is marvellous on this!

I managed to miss the last two heats, I hope nothing good missed out.

Only if you consider the best of Britney Spears and Hilary Duff good. (Sob!)

(Well, "Baby One More Time..." is my actual favorite Britters, but that was last decade.)

Flamboyant is the best PSB song this decade.

Also, it's not on YouTube, but if you can find it, give the Fiery Furnaces track here a listen. It's so good!

It's on EP, which is probably their poppiest collection of songs. Blueberry Boat is one of my albums of the decade, tho.

With "Come Clean" staggering in with a mere seven, I dread how poorly the excellent-but-not-nearly-as-good "Fly" will do, but here it is, with a deliriously poignant keyboard riff from Shanks/small voice from Duff combo at the start of each verse.

I'm restless and wild

Kelly Clarkson quite appealing in one of those songs that starts with a quiet bit of her singing 'I'm feeling a bit rubbish, things are all fvcked up' etc etc, and then there's a big crash and she starts giving it a bit of the screaming emo and then things get quiet again and then the music all crashes back in (helpfully, she even tells us she's screaming):

you hijacked my mind and soul

The Gaelle is one of my top ten -- maybe even top five -- songs of 2004; it's low key and gentle, and desperately wistful, and creeps up on you and just grabs you by the throat when you're not looking. The entirety of the album (Transient) is an absolute lost jewel, really, and it's nothing but a tragedy that it's her only one to date.

I very nearly ticked Starsailor cos the poll reminded me just how often I'd listened to "Four To The Floor" way back then - but there was too much other good stuff to choose from. I feel a bit weird about that, tbh.

Date: 2009-12-13 05:19 pm (UTC)

I nommed Starsailor, mostly because of the Thin White Duke remix, but yeah, also had to vote for other things.

Oh, the remix was good! The song is an oddity, would normally fall into the Not My Thing landfill right away, but was inexplicably attractive. I kind of wanted to hate it, but didn't, and therefore feel genuinely odd about it.

I idly looked up this vid just to remind myself how the song goes. Turns out it contains an ALL STAR CAST (and not just the credited So Solid and J. Legend). So thought I'd share. How many can you spot?
