I'd like to particularly recommend two of my favourite hip hop tracks of the whole decade, Masta Ace's H.O.O.D. (from maybe the album of the year, A Long Hot Summer) and Ghostface's stunning Hollah. This was a very hard call for me - I would like to have given votes to ten tracks here.

I went to see them in 2004 at Notting Hill Arts Club! They were pretty good IIRC.

Goldie Lookin' Chain: the joke did wear a bit thin after a while (definitely way before Maggot went on Celeb Big Brother) however I listened to their first album rather a lot in 2004 and this one still holds up well.

Obv this is the sort of thing that makes the Lex weep for humanity.

Not a big fan of 'chill out'/ 'smooth jazz' music as a rule, but I do love this. So laid back it's almost horizontal, as one commenter on youtube points out.

With "Come Clean" staggering in with a mere seven, I dread how poorly the excellent-but-not-nearly-as-good "Fly" will do, but here it is, with a deliriously poignant keyboard riff from Shanks/small voice from Duff combo at the start of each verse.

Kelly Clarkson quite appealing in one of those songs that starts with a quiet bit of her singing 'I'm feeling a bit rubbish, things are all fvcked up' etc etc, and then there's a big crash and she starts giving it a bit of the screaming emo and then things get quiet again and then the music all crashes back in (helpfully, she even tells us she's screaming):

The Gaelle is one of my top ten -- maybe even top five -- songs of 2004; it's low key and gentle, and desperately wistful, and creeps up on you and just grabs you by the throat when you're not looking. The entirety of the album (Transient) is an absolute lost jewel, really, and it's nothing but a tragedy that it's her only one to date.

Oh, the remix was good! The song is an oddity, would normally fall into the Not My Thing landfill right away, but was inexplicably attractive. I kind of wanted to hate it, but didn't, and therefore feel genuinely odd about it.
