Jay-Z, Estelle, Annie, The Streets and Eric Prydz are all through - Goldfrapp just missed out. Straight on to heat #2!

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you played the investigation game on the previous heat and told us all your new favourite (and why). Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do it for five or more heats and get an extra nomination for 2005.

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote

[Poll #1496188]

Extra ticks this heat go to [livejournal.com profile] friend_of_tofu, [livejournal.com profile] justfanoe, [livejournal.com profile] infov0re, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot and [livejournal.com profile] jeff_worrell.

Was 'Dumb' the one off the soap advert or the one about domestic violence? If it was the one off the soap advert that was blvddy GREBT.

The one about domestic violence is coming up in a later heat.

Can't see YouTube but that means it was the good one, then; they only had two singles.

The Domestic Violence one was one of those number ones you can't quite understand. Also, the worst song about domestic violence EVER.

Beenie Man & Ms Thing - Dude

Come on, y'all know and love this. Fiesta riddim? Totally addictive? Yeah, that one. Not to be confused with Beenie Man's "The Thing", a duet with Ce'cile, which is coming up in a later heat.

Dub About Me

Miss Kittin's dub-flavoured cover of bpitch artist Smash TV's "What About Me". Surprised to find this on youtube. The vid apparently contains "terragen images", whatever they are. Perhaps just listen, hmm?

'Come Home Billy Bird' is a wonderful song, thanks in large part to a guest appearance by Lauren Laverne. 2004 was when I was travelling a lot internationally for werk, so I felt I could relate to the lyrics.

Aaaaaaaargh, this heat was absolutely impossible! In any sane universe, I would have voted for The Futureheads, but this was one of their, er, least decent ones, and up against Mikkel Metal, nooooo. Also DIDN'T vote for Britters (shock!) or for Keane (less of a shock as I usually don't like them much, but er, this was quite a nice song).

SEVEN TICKS NOT ENOUGH!

Yolanda and her dad get into a spat. A pisser. (An even better Perez track is coming up in a couple of heats.)

She's from Los Angeles, mainly sticks to banda with occasional grand attempts at reaching out to hip-hop.

I wanna feel the thunder, I wanna scream. Perhaps the greatest teenpop song ever (unless "She Loves You" and "Like A Rolling Stone" and "Satisfaction" and "Welcome To The Jungle" are teenpop, which they kinda are, and today I might like this one more anyway...). Is also probably better than Edmund Burke on this topic, but I have to read more Burke.

Mind, not that I expect a single soul here to agree on that point, but y'know. IT'S TOTALLY MINE, is all I'm saying.

Just...there's something incredibly evocative, and powerful, about that woozy, off-kilter melancholy. I have been so, so in love with this song for the last half decade.

Aka also in this heat:

Both banging, both utterly awesome. And I frickin' love that Evil Nine video. :D

Come With Me

This is the sole track I nominated this year so I suppose I should post it. Special D - 'Come With Me' is possibly the catchiest song ever recorded, and you can jump around like a mad thing to it too...

This may be an ignorant comment, but that Cat Empire song reminds me of LFO (which is a good thing to remind me of, all in all).

[The American LFO, that is.]

@ [livejournal.com profile] friend_of_tofu re: Culo, the backing always makes me think of Move Ya Body, anyway; maybe that's the familiarity?

Well, yes. They share the same riddim, viz the Coolie Dance. "Move Ya Body" is coming up in a later heat, as is yet another song on the same riddim. Of the three, "Culo" is I'm afraid to say the weakest. So much as I love Pitbull, I've unticked him in favour of Hilary.

Special D

This gets my "best song new to me" vote. As [livejournal.com profile] ijgrieve says above, it's ridiculously catchy and left me with a huge grin on my face when I was listening to it last night. Like Basshunter, only done right!

I enjoyed Yolanda Perez too, although I liked her "dad" more.

WORST new to me track: that Tom Neville remix. OK, "Destroy Rock and Roll" has always been a guilty pleasure at best, but the remix extracts all vestiges of irony as well as musical interest from the track. Bah.

Thanks. I didn't listen to much new music in 2004, but this song really stood out and I still like it a lot.
