I got 294 nominations but Michelle McManus ain't one! Welcome to 2004 everybody - coming up this year we have at least three songs/artists that have inspired lj names of poptimist members, debuts from Kanye, Estelle, TashBed and McFly, plus plenty of mumpop, teenpop, hiphop and blip-bop (that's quite enough of that - Ed).

Without further ado, let's crack open the Brandy and get Bubblin'! (sorry) It's heat #1!

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you played the investigation game on the previous heat and told us all your new favourite (and why). Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do it for five or more heats and get an extra nomination for 2005.

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Tuesday lunchtime to vote

OK, let's begin with the only good boyband song ever <--TRUFACT

Followed by Kylie's second best song of the decade after "Spinning Around" <--ALSO TRUFACT

And this is probably my favourite track on The College Dropout

erm, a Blue top 5 without Fly By II?
You must be kidding.

Also, I forgot to get my non-chart nominations in on time! There was no reminder - which means this poll will be without T.I.?!?

It sort of pains me that I can't tick Clubfoot because it's FVCKING AWESOME and I don't care what you all say. Not as good as 'Empire,' tho, wot I am holding out for.

Haven't heard early Kasabian but like most of what I've heard recently. Never understood the apparent certainty with which they're assumed in these parts not just to be bad but to be The Wrong Thing, A Path Not To Be Followed. Are they too earnest? Are there horribly incriminating interviews I've sidestepped? (I remember someone here saying that about some such band that didn't seem so bad to me, maybe this one, maybe another.)

no, they come across pretty well in interviews actually. it's just that they epitomise the post-oasis Lad Band, also that they totally fail on sounding like happy mondays crossed with screamadelica-era prml scrm which should be the best thing eva but clearly isn't...

I'm gonna do quick write-ups on these, but others of you (esp. [livejournal.com profile] skyecaptain on a couple of these) should embed and do your own.

Michaela Melian "Brautlied": Loved this from the second it showed up in the League Of Pop. Finds gravity in plinky little bells, then strides along purposefully to strings and bass.

Kelly Clarkson "Addicted": Album is called Breakaway but should really have been called Breakaway. (LOL.) 'cause as soon as you start hitting the songs Kelly herself pens (Track 3 "Behind These Hazel Eyes," Track 4 "Because Of You," then this one, Track 6) you hear her fiercely and hopelessly trying to scratch her way out of herself. Being addicted to loving someone is a venerable and tattered trope but she makes it gut-level and personal, following up on the autobiographical "Hazel" where she's not getting over David Hodges and the autobiographical "Because Of You" where she gives herself the choice of either compulsively repeating her mother's love disasters ("I watched you die, I heard you cry every night in your sleep") or walking a living death alone on the safe side. By "Hear Me" (coming up in a few heats) she's screaming out to nowhere. Here she's fighting for her very breath, and the reason she sounds so liberated back on "Since U Been Gone" when she announces "I can breathe for the first time" is that this song makes that one sound like a desperate fantasy.

Ashlee Simpson "Better Off": I seriously think these are some of the best lyrics ever sung by anyone. ("Love Me For Me," which we'll hear in heat four or five, has even better.) Ashlee starts off claiming between the lines that her bad days are as good as her good days ("I spilled my coffee/It went all over your clothes/I gotta wear mine now"; fifteen words tells us she's in a love relationship and the nature of the relationship, an easy sharing, including the sharing of mishaps), but then a few deceptively confident lines later she's confidentially informing us that she's keeping the boy from her friends, doesn't want to lose so soon what she's got now. That's Ashlee: pensive, exuberant live-wire with a bomb of pain and uncertainty underneath.

It's no "Some Girls (Dance with Women)", but I totally ♥ JC Chasez's ADLIDAS (YouTube video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YU0WTJV3m5A), no embedding ect ect). Although the video, which I have not ever seen before, is perplexing: not particularly sechsy, and he's really not much of a looker eh?

No no no, "All Day" is the better song! Definitely. "Some Girls" is really good, but doesn't quite get going in the same way. In my terribly humble opinion ;-)

Aaaaaaargh, impossible choices on this heat.

Augh, why are there so many of mine in this heat?

Anyway, as previously intimated this is one of my tunes of the decade:

Possibly the decade's best trance track: dark but warm, embers and velvet night; it wraps around you and engulfs you, leaves you feeling comforted and safe. You may be lost in the dark of the woods, but there's not a single thing to fear in it.

Also:

John Tejada in one of his most tender moments, without ever forgetting the groove. Minimal and hypnotically pulsing, and raised to outright beautiful by the fragile vocal.

Saul Williams is also minimal, but with sparse music hall piano and sparser beats, and uses it to ruthlessly pick over his own old teenage insecurities (I dreamed of being white and complimented by you/but the only shiny black thing that you liked was my shoes)

I like how Saul's challenge to the bling crowd is a demand that they acknowledge what they and he have in common. (So he's not just saying that his real is realer than their real, though he is sort of saying that too.)

It's pretty much my favourite verse, is that one, for more or less that exact reason, and accordingly contains my 2nd and 3rd favourite lines of the song, too (if you dare to share your heart we'll nod our head to its beat and I plan to have a whole army by the time that I'm through to load their guns with songs they haven't sung).

Lovely Brandy being lovely:

Excellent semi-banger, great melody. NEEDS MOAR TIX, EVERYONE.

--

Lovely JoJo at her possibly all-time loveliest:

I love this one insanely, it just makes me uncomplicatedly happy every time I hear it.

--

Fabolous perhaps not as lovely, but all the more massive:

Yes, JoJo is a MUST TICK.

Have also now ticked Brandy, though whoever dressed/styled her for those black-coloured outfits in the video should be ashamed of themselves. She looks terrible in those shots!

Can't believe I'm the only one who's ticked this so far. Dudes, it was a #1 - and on merit. I'm no great fan of this sort of thing, but... such a massive, massive chorus.

I took a crack at Autobiography two years ago (http://www.cureforbedbugs.com/2007/10/kill-me-kill-me-kill-me-001964.html) and don't have a heckuva lot to add to this song now, except to say that it's my favorite of hers, from an album that's my #1 of the decade. So give it a listen!

Am very glad Estelle and Annie don't need my help here; it actively pains me not to be able to tick them (Estelle significantly more so, though).

Michaela Melian / Sunship

From: [identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com
Michaela Melian is AMAZING, one of the most beautiful records of the decade, starts realy gentle with a tinkly bells sounding like an old music box, and the gradually building. Eery, atmospheric and gorgeous. Oh, and don't watch this video, it's fanmade and shit and distracts from the song.

Glad someone else nominated this as I forgot to. It's a crime I appear to be the only person who's voted for this yet. Have a feeling this may be the wrong mix (am in an internet cafe with no sound. Grrr). If it is, I hope someone else turns up who likes this and posts the right one!

Blimes, I'd forgotten Blowin' Me Up (with Her Love) was this good:

May have to abandon my Brandy tick for it. :(
