The X Factor Finalists tug at the nation's heartstrings (double-whammy of i) sick children ii) recently-ish dead popstar) for some ultra-guaranteed #1 action.

[Poll #1489232]

Heat #8 reminder: tomorrow lunchtime is the deadline for voting in the last poll of 2003. With only one clear leader, the other 4 places are pretty much up for grabs so go and vote for MES and his The Falls!

Oh! That Sweet Child o' Mine cover! Urgh! No! (It seemed to be in some drippy John Lewis advert actually, which I saw in the cinema at the w/e, which probably predisposes me against it, but this is all NEW to me.)

Does the Agnes have a bassline this time?

I am responsible for that cover of 'Sweet Child o' Mine' being in the charts, and I would like to apologise sincerely for this.

Flippant, unsupported statement of the week: that Jason DeRulo track is a bit of a masterpiece, no? Pretty much excuses a lot of the bland auto-tuned R&B we've had to put up with over the past 12 months all on its own. If it's all been leading up to this, then the missteps so far have not been in vain.

The DeRulo record is indeed great. It would be nice if people could be moved to go and buy the excellent new Imogen Heap album as a result.

Apart from the Shakira everything else here is a car crash (apart from the Alesha which is just standard substandard drippy pseudo-balladry) and I am duly taking my long-term sabbatical from Reggie Yates informing me every three seconds that this is an EPIC tune oh it's SUCH an EPIC and it's MY number 38 on MY chart and it's MY music, while reflecting that the late, lamented Fluff Freeman managed to go through the entire chart in one hour.

Depressing that "Russian Roulette" is going to be kept from its rightful chart position by Aww Yirra Little Staaar (copyright C Cole) "singing" about burgers for The Kids. I note that Jedward don't seem to be specifically featured on the record but clearly the joke's worn thin (and the ratings will probably plummet through the basement now but I suppose a month of "DEAD LOCK" was pushing it somewhat).

That Perfect Day cover was a bit epic. And all the numerous covers of that made me giggle. Especially the Harry Enfield one.

That and her ANIMAL COLLECTIVE cover. XD; Rest of her album is pretty good though, just doesn't excuse those two.

FFS.

Rihanna #11 in both singles and albums midweeks. Fucking Peter Kay and Su-Bo at number one respectively.

Can't the Official Charts Company ban stupid people from buying records?

Democracy really is overrated.

Question: if this holds until Sunday, will this be the first time that the top TWO singles have been charity records/

That Peter Kay record really is awful. And simply does not work w/o visuals - who the hell are these ppl "singing" on it? (That's a rhetorical question btw)

Yet again I have to remember that this is the run-up to Christmas and therefore people who never buy music suddenly start buying music. But even by the lame standards of charity records this is particularly malodorous. Perhaps the worst thing about it is that it's going to give Elbow a number one. 69K copies so far in the midweeks so no reason to believe that it won't. Rihanna being shut out of both top tens speaks volumes.
