The girls emerge victorious from heat #7 - Mis-teeq, Rachel, Jamelia, and Kylie are joined by a dark horse in the form of The Postal Service.

On to our final heat of 2003, which has its fair share of (sharp intake of breath) indie. Don't say I didn't warn you!

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you played the investigation game on the previous heat and told us all your new favourite (and why). Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat (i.e. Heat #1 of 2004).

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Tuesday lunchtime to vote

[Poll #1487933]

Extra ticks for this heat go to me, [livejournal.com profile] weasel_seeker, [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus, [livejournal.com profile] justfanoe, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot and [livejournal.com profile] jeff_worrell

I have three nominations in this heat, though 2 are country.

Martina McBride - This One's for the Girls: Fun and danceable country, with great vocals and melody.

Dixie Chicks - Travelin' Soldier: Sad and very pretty country.

Lillix - Tomorrow: Catchy teen rock.

why weren't/aren't Lillix huge? this is the kind of girl band i'd like to have seen do well. ONLY THE BAND HEPBURN COULD'VE BEEN etc.

Had to pick the In-Grid one just because of the title. Sugababes video is still less vomit-inducing than any tick for Dido.

A placeholder for the whole of the Alcachofa LP really, a number of tracks from which should have been nominated ("Easy Lee", "Waiworinao", etc.). This is probably my favourite however.

Since I can't access YouTube at werk, would anyone care to embed a video for Jaimeson's 'True'. One of my very favourite dance tunes of the decade, and no-one has voted for it yet.

'Take Control' from 2004 is also great.

If anyone is wondering where the Pop has gone, it's all in Rose Falcon. I can't get to YouTube, but will cynically and shamelessly use my last tick in the service of anyone who can embed the video for 'Up Up Up'.

Worst. Heat. Ever.

haha clearly [livejournal.com profile] librarian4eva disagrees (tho, sensibly, even he/she draws the line at Scout Niblett)

I'll have to get back to you on that one. Maybe we can make it a charity tick: I'll choose a song that I like well enough that's between 0 and 3 ticks. Or I'll choose a country song.

Ah, I didn't get a chance to listen to enough of these, so you should take your tick back and do with it what you will (though perhaps you could spare an empathetic moment to listen to Fefe Dobson at age 14 pulling a hissyfit/gangshout).

Fefe Dobson "Unforgiven": Fefe stomps on dad, invites us to join in. Brutal, bone-crushing teenpop.

Ladies and gentlemen: In-Grid's Tu es foutu. Classy francophone bosh! From Italy! With accordion! Brilliant, and an absolute European classic.

Very nice. Unsurprised it's Italian. This is the sort of French pop the French themselves can never quite pull off. See also: Carla Bruni (although she kind of lost the plot after her first LP).

Sean Paul aside, this was probably the best dancehall crossover hit of the year:

I still cannot get over how astounding that vocal is!

I voted for it. But technically it's "soca", not dancehall, right? (Or at least that's what I remember people saying at the time.)

You may well be right! Am nothing like an expert (and was in fact wondering whether it counted as dancehall or not).

I just want to note the interesting coincidence of me not realizing who did the song "We Used To Be Friends" until approximately 11 hours ago, when I noticed it in the credits of the eighth or so episode of the first season of Veronica Mars (which show I've been Netflixing, and which show the Warhols song serves as its theme.) Before knowing who did it, I had been thinking "not too bad for an emo song"; now I would be more likely to say "not too good for a Dandy Warhols song. But then again I basically stopped caring about the Warhols after their Come Down album in 1997; to my ears, they just got duller and duller after that, and I will always use that album as my yardstick about their worthiness. Didn't vote for the song, obviously. But don't think it's horrible.

Hmm, each to their own, but I thought ..Monkey House was their highpoint in terms of making decent pop tunes. Although not in terms of haircuts, for sure.

DMX - X gon' Give It To Ya

I love this comically angry, stompy, crazy rap stuff. DMX, all gruff voice and barking noises, has rarely been better than this for me - it's a crazy party record miles ahead of the risible film it was taken from.

I wonder what would be the result of a study comparing the frequency that the letter X appears in these polls, expressed as a percentage, to the percentage that the letter X appears in current written English as a whole.

Compared to the rest of her catalogue, it's a shining pop beacon. Also there's something vaguely contradictory about the lyrics that annoys but then draws you (OK, me) in.
