Best Song Of 2002: Heat #8

Heat #7 was comfortably won by Girls Aloud in a result which will shock everyone, I'm sure. Scooter and the Sugababes make it through, as do dark horses Doves, but a last minute surge from Jimmy Eat World meant they caught Las Ketchup, provoding yet another run-off (see below).

And so to our final heat of 2002, and it's a banger with 14 top 10 hits! Shakira confuses geography and biology, Missy travels back in time and Celine Dion goes disco. It's heat #8, people!

It's a ballad, cheesy but in a good way. No way is it better than WW tho

It's more than just a cheesy ballad thanks to that trademark Shakira lyrical oddness.

"Underneath your clothes(okay so this is a sexy plus bearing your soul thing, I'm with it)/there's an endless story(buh? so that's like a really interesting scar or something?)/There's the man I chose (standard slush)/There's my territory(aaaand there's the scary predator mode)/All the things I deserve/for being such a good girl (ummm sure if you say so Shakira)"

Anyway with the way bouncier, more-tic-filled Whenever Werever being JUST THERE it's not really likely to get ticked by me at present but <3 Shakira <3

According to a fan bio I read early this decade (and such things may not be true, strangely enough), for good Catholic girl Shakira, virginity was a long time getting lost. So this track may actually be about awakening - not of desire, which was there all along, but of the actual, you know, exploration of what events lay in wait underneath the clothes.

Bonkers Shakira is always great (I mean, a nu-disco children's choir protesting the developed world's abandonment of East Timor, and She Wolf) but ballady Shakira always has always has me weak in my knees - there are some great ones on Oral Fijacion vol. 1, but "Underneath Your Clothes" takes the cake for me - I can literally spend days listening to how she wondrously mangles the line "being such a good girl" in half a dozen different but still savagely sexy ways.
