Nelly, Justin, Pink, The Streets and No Doubt are IN; The Rapture, J-Lo and Liberty X are OUT. But who will SHAKE IT ALL ABOUT today?

  • You now only get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you played the investigation game on the previous heat and told us all your new favourite (and why). Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for heat #6!

  • The top five will still go through to the next stage, but now it's going to be that little bit tougher to get there. If your favourite song isn't doing so well then try and convince people in the comments as to why it's so good!

  • If you want to fill in the 'new favourite' box later, change your vote, or tick too many by mistake, you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote.

[Poll #1463987]

Extra ticks this heat go to: [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot and er, me. See above for instructions on how to go back and fill in the 'new favourite' question later on, if you are desperate to do your ticks RIGHT NOW.

i think the unperfect love mix is tobias thomas/superpitcher?

anyway DUDE this is the worst track on 'immer'! it is like the minimal techno "i am stretched on your grave" or something.

LeAnn Rimes "No Way Out." My favorite song of hers ever, from her great Flashdance-style flop Twisted Angel. Pain and flame, a short girl raises her voice in desperation.

Not sure what I was expecting this to sound like, but this is not it. Will probably edge out my 6th tick -- *why did no one tell me that Leann Rimes was one of the fucking missing links of teen confessional???*

More Than A Woman is such an amazing slow jam. It's so loving and tender that the ache of the chorus where you realise it's a bit unrequited is stunningly effective. The languid vocals and beat are ...I dunno, like that tender time in the morning when you wake up with someone. My second favourite Aaliyah track.

Oh and swooning, spinning Kylie is a total flirt as always and all the better for it.

Disappointed it isn't the Arthur Baker remix of Obstacle One.

Oh and No One Knows is fvcking brilliant. Nick Oliveri's finest baseline? I think so.

This may garner my Not Previously Heard accolade: it's very nice, a smoothed-out "Heartbeat" at the start, spare and half quirky, and then it finds a nice bed of sound to float into the sky on (to mix my metaphors; I'm probably thinking of Dream of a Rarebit Fiend).

Brilliant electronica, simply constructed but so atmospheric. The loops are created from samples of compositions by the likes of Arvo Part and Ligeti, I think. Murcof's Martes is such an essential 00s LP.

The visuals here = vidjing by some French dude. Haven't checked the audio quality yet. Fingers x'd it's decent.

Martes is utterly stunning-- I don't know if i'm going to be able to take a tick away from Trina for it though.

This was a particularly hard heat for me, with a full eight tracks that were on my nominations list (though I was probably beaten to actually nominating a few of them). I therefore failed to vote for two things that I believe I nominated, so apologies to Xzibit and Noreaga, if they are reading this.

Making that sound, she reminds me of some kind of animal. It is a very good vowel sound, though.

I can't do embedding at werk, but 'Nu-Flow' is struggling badly in a heat in which I would have expected it to go through comfortably. So this is me trying to rally the troops.

Maybe people hate it because of that awful Halifax advert?
From: [identity profile] meserach.livejournal.com
I do like Nu Flow, but I don't really /love/ it and is thus likely to suffer in the new six-tick regime. Also, it's surely entirely unknown outside the UK, which won't help.

The Xzibit is great, may get my vote for best 'new to me' track.

I'll post this 'un though, which takes a minute or so to get going, but the insistent synth groove eventually helps the track assume epic proportions. Timbaland really could do nothing wrong in 2002.

Not on youtube, but so very very worth hearing

which is obv why I has uploaded it. 2002: the year techno hero Luke Slater pissed off most of his fanbase by making an electropop album. Thing was, it was a brilliant electropop album. 'Only You' is absolutely the biggest standout on it: intricately woven bed of beats and intermittent noises underlaid with a feather-light synth touch, and a vocal that almost entirely inhabits a microtonal register. (I am very, very weak vs. microtones, in case this wasn't guessable, hee.) The result is somehting really special, and faintly otherwordly.

Or in short form: LISTEN TO THIS, YOU GUYS.

Top new one this time around: Murcof's Mir; actually youtubed this one already at the nominations stage, due to previous (passing) familiarity with the artist. Great tension in the way it's minimal & intricate, chilly & warm at the same time, but what really makes it are the sparse string loops. Simply stunning.

Also loved: the Mack 10 (ticked), Rhianna (ticked), Cam'ron (very very nearly ticked), Blackalicious, and really, between this and the last heat, I'm thinking I need to check out that LeAnn Rimes alb.

(I also nearly ticked the Erykah Badu just because I love Brown Sugar SO MUCH, but decided that might be taking things a bit too far.)
