POP WORLD CUP - Rules
Jan. 11th, 2006 11:40 amThese are the rules for the Pop World Cup.
THE FORMAT
The Pop World Cup has two stages - a group stage (Jan-March) and a knockout stage (March-June).
In the group stage, each manager must submit one eligible track. Voters will choose between all four tracks. The top two tracks in each country will progress to the knockout stage.
In the knockout stage each manager must submit one eligible track for each game they are involved in. Games in the knockout stage will be decided by a simple poll. Should the poll end in a draw, I will withdraw my vote in order to create a result (unless I can think of a way of simulating a penalty shoot out, ahem).
Tracks will be hosted on the Freaky Trigger server, and can also be gmailed to participants.
Pop World Cup matches will happen every Wednesday, unless I'm out of the country in which case they'll be put back or forward a day. Voting officially ends the day before the next match.
ELIGIBLE TRACKS
A performer is eligible if
- they are or have been a citizen of the country you manage, or their parents were citizens of the country you manage (the "Irish Grandmother" rule)
- they have not previously appeared in the Pop World Cup competition, representing the country you manage or another country. (in other words you need to find a different performer for each game).
Bands and groups are eligible if any of their members fulfils these criteria.
Performer in this case includes remixers, if they are credited as such in the track title (eg "The Killers - Mr Brightside (Jacques Lu Cont Mix)" would be eligible for England or the USA.)
A track is NOT eligible if it was posted on Poptimists at any time before 11.1.06.
SUBMITTING A TRACK
If submitting a track in MP3 format... you need to get it to me the day before the game, so I can check it works and upload it to the FT server. You can email it or send it as a link, to freakytrigger@gmail.com.
If you can't get hold of an MP3 but you know which track you want to enter... please let me know the track name ASAP so we get the best chance of getting hold of a copy.
For every track you submit you need to submit a team talk - a short write-up of the track giving a little background and explaining why people should vote for it. These should be 20-200 words, don't go mental on them. Email them to freakytrigger@gmail.com.
WITHDRAWALS
If you can't fulfil your managerial duties then you need to let me know ASAP at freakytrigger@gmail.com so a suitable assistant can be found.
FAIR PLAY GUIDELINES
The type of music you submit is entirely up to you. There's no global definition of 'pop' we're expecting you to adhere to. Similarly there's no particular rules guiding how you vote. However you are reminded that one of the ideas of the Pop World Cup is to hear exciting music you don't already know. If you want to grind out a result by posting an acknowledged classic then by all means do, but some voters may prefer to reward flair and attacking play, as represented by choosing something new or obscure. Still others may disapprove of this as being too much fanny dangle.
