Mercifully un-controversial results for Heat #7 - Destiny's Child get their 5th qualification of the decade so far, Jay-Z gets his 4th. They're joined by the Avalanches, OutKast and Wheatus.

What better way to round off the year than with the MOTHER of all heats - 16 top 10 hits and plenty of non-charting bangers. Get ready to wail and gnash those teeth!

  • You get a maximum of TEN TICKS over the three bits of the poll. The top five will go through to the next stage.

  • If you want to change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • UK chart placings given in brackets.

  • You have until Tuesday lunchtime to vote. Then I'll post up the finalists for 2001 and tell you about nominations for 2002.

  • Rep for your favourites in the comments! Youtube embeds very welcome.

Looks fairly safe at the mo'.

Believe it or not, I have never heard this before. I do recognise the backing track/riddim though (the bloopy synths), which I'm guessing had a life outside this song.

It is fantastic though, and the video is hilarious. TICK.

I believe mine and Kat's consensus is that if this doesn't go through we're going to redo the poll and only let us vote.

Coincidentally this just popped up on Twitter - Usain Bolt dancing on stage w/Roots Manuva to "Witness (1 Hope)" (http://www.digitalnewsagency.com/story/view/3519-puma-party-at-the-yaam-club-in-berlin/video) (skip to second video).

This is going to require a lot of independent listening, as there are many I don't know here. In the meantime, here is "What's Your Fantasy":

From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
I second Kat: you must listen to Roots Manuva.

And in return everyone must listen to "What's Your Fantasy?" because holy SHIT the remix still kills. All three of them go so fucking hard on it. Recent ILM poll thread on whose verse is the best (http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=41&threadid=71251).

"I wanna nigga that'll grab the weave and turn my eyes Chinese" may well be one of my favourite hip-hop lyrics EVER, instant oh-my-god-did-she-just-say-that-REWIIIIIIND moment, well done Shawnna. And Fox is just terrifying:

You gotta li-l-l-lick me from my ass to my clit
Then you gotta su-suck the pussy while I sit on your dick*
And I wanna talk some shit while I feel it get stiff
And then rub-a-dub on my tits while I nut on your lips, nigga!

*is this...even...physically possible? Just, WOW ♥ ♥

And the BEAT, whoa whoa whoa. Everyone went nuts over "A Milli", with reason, but as Bangladesh beats go this slays it.

Argh, I cannot find a decent quality video for Zip City :(

But here is my pitch: southern rock at it's finest - clever lyrics, a three-axe attack (that even works on their acoustic songs, somehow), and a real sense of, I dunno, honesty? They don't take themselves too seriously (this track is from Southern Rock Opera, kindasorta inspired by Lynard Skynard) but also they aren't just messing about and have been writing and touring for ages. I hope they get famous / win some awards / tour some arenas soon!

"Ugly" is a great song (and his mental country hick-hop 2002 material will be even better when we get there) and I fully endorse its progress, but everyone who ticked it should also give the sadly languishing "What's Your Fantasy?" and DMX x 2 a listen.

From: [identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com
"Ugly" is probably in my top 5 songs of 2001 (and I think I nommed it). But as it's doing so well, I've withheld a tick in favour of some languishers.

And not that this will get more than 3 or 4 votes, but here's "When God Fearin' Women Get the Blues", which is surely one of the finest country singles of the decade:

this song is well sexy-

By the way, you have FORTY SEVEN SHORT MINUTES to go back, correct yr strategically pointless votes for Bat For Lashes/Kings Of Leon/Yeah Yeah Yeahs etc in the Lex 20p Indie Prize poll and consequently stop me having to buy a Florence and the Machine single.

Thanks for posting this. I think this was the very first thing I nominated right back at the very start of this competition (it's a 2000 track but didn't peak until '01).

"banging technopop" doesn't do it justice: it's more trance than techno, and actually quite a subtly (and brilliantly crafted) song. The way the melody line in the "we can only understand what we are shown" section moves against the pulse is genius.
From: [identity profile] piratemoggy.livejournal.com
This was a fvcking ANTHEM for me circa writing Hole lyrics on my rucksack. (nb: it's a rather lovely smooth/semi-acoustic r'n'b jam or whatever)

"Whole Again" is a mystery. It's a shamelessly derivative rip-off, produced cheaply and performed terribly by an awful pop group. And yet, it is an excellent pop song despite this!

(Not in my top 10 here though.)

i've seen chaos and order running free

it may be possible to tell I was taping the r'n'b chart this year...

possibly not as great as I thought at the time but I still like that cutesy little sinister beat and the girl sounds so fluid. Ace trip-hop.

Edit: OH. That middle eight! life: your heart is caught up with your brain/emotional or reason, now which one do you obey? it's like somebody calling you insane when overwhelmed and blessed, burst into tears of happiness -ok yes the lyrics are a bit balls but it sounds AMAZING.

We got so much confusion IN OUR TICKING

REALLY shocked Aaliyah's not among the frontrunners here - that song kills.

Love that "Ugly" is in the lead tho, and Eve doing so well.

I ticked 8 or 9, some of which I'll probably change later.

And though I never stump for anything, I can't believe I'm the only person so far who's voted for what may well be my favorite r&b single of the decade:

Also, what the heck happened to my nomination for this song? It would've won for sure! (Okay, maybe not, but still):

This is my favourite Artful Dodger track; maybe one of my favourite songs ever. Amazing shellshocked, longing, soulful performance from Michelle Escoffery; beautiful production, from the initial tension as the beats come in to that gorgeous distant piano throughout. Actually heartbreaking.

Um, have people forgotten another Mis-Teeq single? Refresh your memories!

From: [identity profile] skyecaptain.livejournal.com
Voted for the Mis-Teeq remix, was just about to post it!
From: [identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com
Agreed on Artful Dodger - will go and tick.

All these Mis-Teeq garage remixes sound the bloody same to me. I will definitely B tickin' the "B With Me" remix when we get to that however.

"Party Up" seemed to be the consensus DMX single but I much prefer the stuff off The Great Depression, which is one of the finest hip-hop albums I own - totally recommend it, and sad I couldn't nominate "We Right Here" as well.

^^This appears to be...a REALLY GREAT Youtube fan video for "Who We Be"!
