Lucinda Williams is so overwrought I always have trouble listening to her without breaking down into giggles. The rockin' beat of pain pushed forth through lips of the slur of pain! Makes Marianne Faithfull and Kurt Cobain seem like masters of understatement in comparison. But I've never really gotten 'round to her lyrics, wherein may be much nuance and many meanings. And I could well end up voting for "Essence" by default.

Have you ever heard Mary Gauthier? Definitely draws Lucinda Williams comparisons (from me anyway). Not to mention similar giggles.

Funny, I've never thought of her as overwrought before, certainly not compared to Courney/Tori/PJ (all of whom use their overwrought voices to good purpose). Like, there's this ever-present ache in her voice, but she never bashes you over the head with it.

Her lyrics are impressionistic and evocative and would look simplistic on the page; her voice really brings them to life, for me.

I'm sure I've heard Mary Gauthier but I can't remember exactly what...

Well, live Lucinda's the loud version of overwrought, while on album she veers more towards the mumbling method-acting version. Can't say I've never giggled at Courtney/Tori/PJ, either. Of course I'd tick almost any Courtney product in a second.
