Mary J Bilge, call her by her name.

Also did Alan Hawkshaw write/perform the Grange Hill theme? He played keyboards for the Shadows for a while.

Hawkshaw wrote it (it's a piece of library music originally dubbed Chicken Man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_Man)). It was recorded for the Themes International library label, so the performers would have been a bunch of session musicians.

His stint in The Shadows is a mere footnote in his illustrious career. He's probably the greatest composer-arranger of library music of the late 60s and 1970s, not to mention a brilliant organist.

One of these days I'll get around to writing that piece on library music I offered Tom yonks ago...

Brian Bennett of the Shadows was also big in library music in the 70s IIRC - he's even got a piece of electronic music on a compilation/history of electronic music I saw recently.

That's right. Dutton Vocalion has been putting out some good comps of KPM library music lately, e.g. this one:

http://www.moviegrooves.com/shop/bigcitysuitekpm1000series.htm

which includes some great Bennett and Hawkshaw tracks, although as a rule Vocalion tends to pick the smoother cuts over the more raucous or plain bonkers ones.

Most of the albums featured in the sidebar on the left hand side of that page are also worth checking out, although the Bennett comp there is already out of print (and now offered for sale for £100+ on ebay and Amazon marketplace! For a CD about 3 years old!!)

Actually what I would like on CD is a copy of Hong Kong Beat, which was a load of 70s/80s TV themes composed by I-forget-who that included The Great Egg Race, Quiller, and HKB. It was on BBC records.
