Ladies and gents, it's time for 2001: A Poll Odyssey! Mumpop fans are wailing and gnashing their teeth at the news that two of the top three album artists of the year (David Gray and Robbie Williams) are nowhere to be found in these heats, and the third (Dido) just scraped in by the skin of her teeth (courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] justfanoe). Can teenpop, hiphop and chart bosh save the day? There's only one way to find out.

So let's get cracking with a high-charting heat - ten top 5 hits and three number ones. Happy ticking!

  • You get a maximum of TEN TICKS over the three bits of the poll. The top five will go through to the next stage.

  • If you want to change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • UK chart placings given in brackets.

  • Rep for your favourites in the comments! Youtube embeds very welcome.

[Poll #1430999]

You have until next Tuesday lunchtime to vote.

but the jean-jacques smoothie is GORGE. possible necessity for my poptimism set.

swoon, etc. am such a sucker for songs that sound like that and was at the time, despite being a hairy rocker.

I ticked seven in my first pass, but the majority of these I've yet to hear, so some of those ticks will change. (And I'll consider it a personal failure if I can't find ten I like more than "Because I Got High.")

it was part of urban regeneration: the covers album. there were LOADZ of things. janet jackson did one with a boyband but i can't remember which.

Ten exactly on first pass. Plenty I haven't heard though, so persuade away.

I will note in passing that a world in which the Genius Cru gets half the votes of the Dandy Warhols is not a world I wish to raise my children in.

And I'll be personally affronted if people don't at least listen to "5 Deuce-4 Tre," which sums up the best of the early '00s Hip-Hop South: the slow lazy speech that's actually pressurized rather than lazy, and the pretty neoclassical melody that's actually menacing beneath the prettiness:

(But ignore the first 20 seconds of this, which is the YouTuber's addition, not part of the song.)

'Ante Up' is great but I prefer 'Break Ya Neck' b/c it has Busta going at breakneck (DYS) speed rather than galumphing around. Thought 'Ante Up' was a dead cert for a tick but the last section really brought some disproportionate awesomeness.

I will second that, and note as an addendum that Mis-Teeq seem to have half the votes of...can this be right...Super Furry Animals? And Gorillaz? My eyes are surely deceiving me.

The only song not improved by the appearance of Busta :(

(It is still great, though)

The Brooks & Dunn reminds Kat of Heart, and reminds me of Londonbeat.

I listened to it! This heat is too strong for a song I heard for the first time an hour ago though. I'm pleased it got represented though, esp as my Dungeon Family tracks never made it through the nomination process.

Frank do you know 'Before The Goodbye'? Is one of my fav Britney tracks EVER - heart-stopping electro-stutter caught-in-this-moment micro-details give way to a massive, gorgeous wash of electronics for the chorus, then back to the twitching intimacy, and then a FUCKING MASSIVE POUNDING HOUSE BEAT HALFWAY THROUGH. Produced by BT, really incredible stuff.

9 ticks on first sweep (although I may untick Daft Punk - how does Aerodynamic go?). I'll try to study the reps and the form carefully before making further decisions.

The Fennesz track is the pretty, non-glitchy one on Endless Summer that sounds like stammering vibraphones. I hope it gets a bit of love.

Can we all at least agree that 2001 was the best year of this decade?

Uh...three ticks so far? Have we actually FORGOTTEN this song?

Best British girl group...ever? I think so! This is why Alesha Dixon's new career makes me a bit sad. She's so much better than churning out conservatively-minded MOR-pop, and (ugh) being a judge on (ugh) reality TV dancing contests.

"All I need to know is that the world is mine" is one of my favourite pop lyrics ever. All I need to know - as if it's totally nothing ♥

bum, i had actually forgotten how that one went. *goes back, redoes poll.*

...wait hang on, is the remix the actual version or is it some rub thing?

That's the remix - the Sunship mix was the radio version, and indeed the album version on my copy, so I'm not even sure what the "original" is like, if indeed there is one.

I think memories might need refreshing on this one too. Ms Dynamite is so versatile on this, the way she switches almost imperceptibly between singing and MCing, from murmuring almost half to herself to addressing the crowd full on...

This STILL gets played out loads at garage nights, and STILL gets a huge reception every time...

Some cracking tunes in this poll - easy votes for Mis-Teeq, So Solid Crew, Busta Rhymes, Destinys Child.

I can't access YouTube at werk, but everyone should go check out that Kosheen track - it was a big favourite of mine back in '01.

My album copy has a "non-Sunship" version. I'll have to try and remember to upload it at some point this weekend.
