Still D.R.E., Spinning Around and The Real Slim Shady led the pack in Heat #7, while Stronger and Stan fought off a last minute surge by The Bad Touch to join them in the 2000 final.

Last heat today! And there are some proper bangers below the cut...

  • You get a maximum of TEN TICKS over the three bits of the poll. The top five will go through to the next stage.

  • If you want to change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • UK chart placings given in brackets.

  • Rep for your favourites in the comments!

[Poll #1423267]

You have until Friday lunchtime to vote, at which point I'll post a full list of the qualifiers for the 2000 final. HOWEVER we're not going to be voting on that straight away (to try and avoid tick-fatigue on the same songs). Instead, next week we're going to start nominations for 2001. There will be a slight change in nomination procedure (more details to follow) but there'll still be plenty of time to get your thinking caps on.

And: I hoped Wonderful, probably as close to Everclear got to make a genuinely fine song, might do better. It is not going to touch Daphne & Celeste, but come on people, 2?

Whups, didn't notice that was there. Knew there must be something for my final tick.

I love the line about not wanting to meet the divorced parent's new friend, but I preferred five or six songs on the previous album (especially "Sunflowers," "So Much For The Afterglow," and "I Will Buy You A New Life"): they were leaner, meaner, and had more of a kick. Of course that may be exactly why you don't prefer them to "Wonderful."

I don't know; I think on parts of Songs from an American Movie pt1 they found something that totally eluded them elsewhere.

Tbh I've never heard another song by Everclear. Wonderful was a moderate hit here and it's got just the right sort of balance of tweeness and powerpop, mixed with the correct emotional cocktail for the age I was at the time, to still make me choke up a bit like a MASSIVE GIRL.

Seriously, you'd probably like the rest of the album it's from - it is very much something that meant a lot at the time, and there are some horrible songs on it alongside the good ones, but it feels right, and slightly special.

Also, it features a cover of Brown-Eyed Girl.

There are only TWO horrible songs on pt1, which is a pretty good hit rate for Everclear! And yes, Moggy, do listen to the rest of the album; I am such a massive girl about it I can barely form a critical response, but I do think you would enjoy it.

I love So Much For The Afterglow. Here's "I Will Buy You A New Life."

I think "Wonderful" is their best song. I'm not convinced the bite on their earlier stuff really suited their sound well, though "I Will Buy You a New Life" is great.

Not even close to their best song (or best hit), as Frank says below, and Songs From An American Movie doesn't stand up to the two albums that came before. But still probably still good enough to get a tick from me here.
