4. Royksopp - You Don't Have A Clue
5. Richgirl - He Ain't With Me Now Tho

I'd been thinking this year had been dry so far but no that's just the charts. Tell your ten!

was gonna type stuff out w/last.fm as a reference point then realised how pointless that was when I could just paste the link to my top trax of the last 6 months! http://www.last.fm/user/lexpretend/charts?rangetype=6month&subtype=tracks

and yeah you're right that any mediocrity this year has been solely confined to the charts - in terms of new music I'm constantly discovering, it's getting better and better and better in every direction. so...fuck the charts. it seems the a fool's game to hope that any of the great stuff will get into them - i don't think i can recall a time when what "mainstream pop" meant in this country was this awful.

well yeah, ditto, hence the 3 months list.

I feel you re: the charts and wanting them to be better but there's a point at which it gets so bad for so long that you have to stop caring, really, and we've passed that point for me. It's not just the usual crop of bad songs, it's mainstream pop music overall...what that's come to mean, what it takes for an artist to become part of it.

- Pizza Hut/Taco Bell
- I'm On A Boat

I would like to point out to the h8tas that I like the above two not because they are 'funny' but because they are CATCHY (and boshing, in the case of PH/TB) and I have been singing them round the house constantly for the last few months.

OK now that's off my chest, here's some more:

- 'Death of Autotune' (only heard this week and may go off it but I just ♥ Jay-Z rhyming over the top of the clinky-glass sound cf 'Roc Boys')
- 'Intuition' by Keri Hilson (still my top pick off the album though about 4 other tracks are v close behind)
- 'A Thing For Me' by Metronomy (dreadful vocal but I keep coming back to it, argh)
- 'Bubblicious' by Rex T Dog
- 'Like A Surgeon' by Ciara (best slow jam of the year, tho it's more like a slow marmalade it's so sharp)
- 'Beat Again' by JLS (surprise pop WINNAH of the year so far)
- 'Zero' by the YYYs (definite grower)
- 'Lions/Tigers/Bears' by J-Sull (epic)
- 'Clocks' by H2 (obligatory minimal bosh)

PS If "High Cost Of Living" counts as a 2008 "track" (since that's when it was in fact an album track, even though it's a single in 2009, in which case the same rule would apply to "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift), next in line would be one of these three:

-- The Lonely Island feat. T-Pain – “I’m On A Boat”
-- Florence and the Machine – “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)”
-- The Flatlanders – “Homeland Refugee”

"You Belong With Me" was a digital single in 2008, actually, and jumped to number 12 on the U.S. charts. But that's no reason not to vote for it now, while it's having an impact on a greater number of people; ditto for "High Cost Of Living." Unless you're looking for reasons to cut down the number of eligible songs.

this is harder than I thought - had a top 10 down easy, but then it turned out lots of them were from late 2008 and I didn't hear them till this year.
