Has anybody else here heard of La Roux? She's a great new act from the UK who is getting a lot of buzz lately. She toured with Lily Allen recently overseas. Her music is really unique and addicting, i think. She's got a great look and a great sound and is bound to blow up!

Her video for "In for the Kill" is amazing. Its got great imagery, watch it here: "In for the Kill" video.
After that pick it up on iTunes here: "In for the Kill" on iTunes

The video for "Quicksand" is equally as good.
Pick up the "Quicksand" EP on iTunes here: "Quicksand" EP on iTunes.

Derek, before asking such questions, it's often good to run a search first. E.g., if you go to Google and type in site:community.livejournal.com/poptimists "la roux" you'll get eight links, including these:

And clicking through this one:

(Also not good to make your first post to a community one that provides links that invite people to spend money.)

"mod comment" and that

Well this is interesting. I was going to make a post about La Roux anyway so I think I'll just let this slide along, despite being confused as to whether you're street teaming (although there'd be some argument for saying Poptimists is a street team of a sort -pub team, possibly) or whether I am just finding life too confusing right now. Also I had to get up at 4:45am and am probably still feeling the effects of nightcap applied to knock self out to sleep and then have been standing in the stairwell of a bus ever since so WHATEVS innit.

Anyway, my La Roux post was going to be discussing the fact the band are RUB but the remixes are MINDBLOWING, eg this-

Which is not for sale anywhere, I suspect, in the usual assbackwards way these things are done.

I like that Ellie's vocals, annoying and tinny tho they are on the original tracks suddenly become just standard euphoric trance vocals on the remixes. Which is fine, obvs, because euphoric trance is pretty ace. As are my new headphones.

What are people's favourite La Roux remixes? There's a really good "disgusting" (in the words of my beloved Nerm) dnb version of 'In For The Kill' that I can't find on YouTube.

I'm going to have a nap now.

I was listening to a great dubstep version of In For The Kill on Friday which I assume was this this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFW4LqsTPO0&feature=related) but it doesn't really sound the same through laptop speakers.

Quicksand is rubbish but the official remixes are pretty good.

There're a lot of dub remixes, in particular, none of which I can find. I would burrow through tracklistings etc. and find out exactly what they're called but probably ought to pretend to work at least a bit.

I still think the autokratz mix of "Quicksand" is fantastic. The originals can be good but can also be disappointing, I'm a little split on La Roux (missed seeing her live cos of post ATP flop, so I can't comment on the live performances of the band), but some definite positives.

You're right on the importance of the remixes for the brand, I think.

This yells 'street team'... I think the response so far has been remarkably good-humoured.

But then I suppose I'm taking for granted that La Roux has been receiving blanket-saturation media coverage since january and it's barely possible to turn on a radio without hearing one of her records. Unless it's the Today programme, obv. Whereas this new poptimiser is clearly foreign.

[livejournal.com profile] derektrainwreck - sorry dude but please don't do this sort of post again, otherwise we may have to limit your posting access and no-one wants that. Thing is, no-one wants spam either (whether it's an artist lots of us approve of or not) unless it is particularly entertaining in itself.

If you're not sure whether something might be spammish, drop me an email at my livejournal address first.

I initially took this for a brilliant parody of street-teaming - pick the most tediously over-hyped act going and then act like they're really cool and new and underground!
But then, I often underestimate the idiocies of marketing.

I danced to La Roux on Saturday night, initially by mistake and then by the time I realised, because I was dancing with someone cute. But I still feel slightly soiled.

Actually this seems as good a thread as any to mention that I like the new Florence and the Machine single a lot.

yeah me too, it reminds me of ten other old songs to the extent that i was being driven mad trying to work out exactly which ones (impossible).

One old song - 'Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover' by Sophie B Hawkins. Not as good as that, mind.

I heard it while intending to jukebox it and it was SHOCKING how not-crap it was. I mean, I'm sure I remember the last one being abysmal, and this was...I wouldn't say I liked it a lot, and the video was annoying*, but it definitely wasn't bad! The Sophie B Hawkins comparison someone made in the blurbs was v OTM (prob more helpful than the spectre of Kate Bush tbh). That said while I was moved to acquire the mp3, I haven't yet been moved to play it again.

*this seems as good a place as anywhere to bring up something Frances Morgan wrote/said about Bat For Lashes (haven't read what she wrote, Kate retweeted it or something). BFL as we know comes from a famous Pakistani squash dynasty, and apparently in person has a sportswoman's attitude to success and a go-getting nature. Yet on record and live, she's so ethereal as to be totally insubstantial. The question posed is whether "ethereality" is something she (consciously or unconsciously) opted for b/c that's more acceptable in a female pop star in a way that a jockish aggression isn't.

the lionheart remix makes me EXPLODE WITH JOY. i nearly went mad and bought the blvddy album earlier but fortunately managed to remove self from hmv and even put the rare-ish mastodon album i'd found back before anything financially ruinous happened.

re: bat for lashes i don't really get that point because to me she always sounds really heavy handed. i realise gothery and subtlety are not instant bedfellows but she sounds like she makes her songs out of black duplo.

my duplo actually is black, of course, so i am cheating.

I think I'm showing my age here - I like some of what they're doing in the remix, but when I was a lad, the remixes were expected to improve the beat, which this really doesn't. Also slapping on house piano = -100 points.
