Two interesting possible qualifiers here in "Flowers" v "Don't Falter" I reckon - both tracks that are iconic, revered & beloved "perfect pop" songs for two (semi-overlapping) pop aesthetics. Knowing the make-up of Pmists I'd guess Mint Royale have a better chance, tho they're not getting a vote off me.

'FLOWERS'. That is all. This is very possibly my favourite pop song EVER, my lock to win the whole damn thing, it fits so well into so many situations - dancefloor anthem, house party tune, sunny day soundtrack, rainy day soundtrack...it's just PERFECT.

OH-OH BABY!

Perhaps my miserliness with ticks in the first heat was a fluke, as I had no problem finding ten I wanted to vote for here. Two were my noms (2nd Kelis, Ghostface), but they don't look in with a chance, sadly.

Much stronger than the previous heat! 20 or so initial ticks...whittling down was done so TACTICALLY so didn't tick a few of the bigger/probable winners

I am betting that Craig David will be robbed yet again here. Whether this is because too many Americans are voting, because I am the only person whose memories of that period are completely defined by Craig David, or because poptimist is a short-hand term for indie-loving cock-banger, I do not know.

but it is a RUB craig david. to be fair i only ever actually liked 'walking away' but nevertheless, 'fill me in' goes on my list of 'songs that make me feel irrationally uncomfortable.'

- Ticked 10 but 'Forgot About Dre' is v vulnerable to being unticked in favour of 'Gasoline Dreams' or 'Dooms Night'
- Haven't heard Ghostface but want to!
- 'Don't Call Me Baby' sounds worse IRL than it has in my head all these years - great tune but it goes on a bit and gets a bit flat after a while
- Remember not minding 'Deeper Shade Of Blue' at the time but finding it far too cheesy now - Steps scare me slightly, they're a bit wrong
- Surprised 'Crazy Love' isn't doing better - thought this was definitely pop canon! The original's not on Youtube (though it is on that Spotify playlist, I think), but LOL here is a Jools Holland performance of it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7bwtBszSeo).
- OMG 'FEELIN ON YO BOOTY' NEEDS 5 MILLION TIMES MORE LOVE! This is a standard! Which spawned a gazillion awesome remixes as well (the Southern one w/Youngbloodz is so A+). Suuuuch a great slow jam, such a beautiful tune!

This is my song for reeeeal no doubt

I ticked 7 based on sheer memory, but there are many here I've not heard, as I was totally disconnected from pop music at this point (including the Kelis songs). So I will go back and retick.
From: [identity profile] piratemoggy.livejournal.com
URGH maybe i should untick doomsnight? i know it's a MASSIVE BANGER n all but it does get unreasonably lauded as d'n'b track of THE CENTURY when clearly this is all tosh as d'n'b track of the century is actually the high contrast remix of hometown glory, much as i understand that that should not be true.

d00ds not be ticking NFG and this is WRONG because it is an 100% awesome song. of course most people were probably not twelve and listening to kerrang! compilations at this time so i may have a slightly differing perspective on the whole thing.
From: [identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com
Dooms Night dnb? shurely not... it got some surprising 2step/proto-grime crossover tho iirc

dnb track of the century could be a fun poll all on it's own. i will at least be nominating Shy FX & T Power 'Shake Ur Body' and Marky's 'LK/The Way' for future 00s year polls.

I imagine this round was much harder for non-British people, as I'd never heard a good deal of stuff that, listening now, wouldn't have pegged as something that charted in the UK. Though some American stuff I hadn't yet heard got my extra couple of ticks (second Kelis single is great). TBH the most perplexing pick right now is Mint Royale. I mean...it's pleasant, I guess?

Full list of what from this heat I couldn't find on Spotify:

Sunship - Cheque One Two
Chris Morris - Club News
Broadcast - Come On Let's Go
Ladytron - Commodore Rock
Bent - Cylons In Love
Mirwais - Disco Science
M2M - Don't Say You Love Me (16) (I put a "Karaoke" version on the playlist, though)
SoulDecision - Faded
Sweet Female Attitude - Flowers (2)]

Otherwise, the playlist c'est fini.

A much better heat overall, but I refuse to be drawn into your "tick 10 songs" mindgames. I'll just tick the ones I like, I'm not going to tick for the sake of it, as it lowers the chances of my favourites getting through.

The six that get my vote this time:
Madison Avenue, Mint Royale, Sweet Female Attitude, Dr Dre ft Eminem, Bomfunk MCs, Foo Fighters
The first 4 of these all appear in my personal top 20 of the year though.

don't say you don't love "Don't Say You Love Me" .... is nobody else going to stump for 'the song that started confessional teen-pop' (according to frank 'n' dave) needs more love!! this heat's light on the teenybop, but this is the clear forerunner there imo...

(even tho I have serious fondness for "Digital Get Down" as well)

also: i will be v. sad if "Don't Tell Me" goes down, which is looking like a possibility. definitely the greatest of the several great singles from Music.

p.s. vote for "Crazy Love" too.

I might switch my Xtina vote to "Don't Tell Me," only because it and "Music" help to redeem almost everything else she did in this period (late 90s to 2000). And she should probably have credit for something, though it will probably be "Music," since she probably won't make much of a showing again until "Hung Up" in 2005.

So there are currently three tracks tied for that all-important fifth place! Looks like Kelis I and Dr Dre are in the clear, Mint Royale and (phew, killing spree averted) Sweet Female Attitude likely to be safe too. Steps vs Madison Avenue vs Madonna is a rather underwhelming FITE though - I have much love for 'Don't Tell Me' and it's definitely the only acceptable winner, but there aren't any heavyweights in there. Craig David to overtake all of them? Maybe Azzido Da Bass or Outkast or Kelis II? Maybe even a miracle from MJ Cole or R Kelly? Am contemplating redistributing my Dre tick to, uh, a newly-heard Ghostface, helping absolutely no one.
