Here we go dudes!

  • You get TEN TICKS IN TOTAL over the three bits of the poll. But only the top five will go through to the next stage so choose wisely!

  • If you change your mind, you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • Ten ticks is the maximum but you may tick fewer if you find the list is uninspiring!

  • For your ticking pleasure, I've added the UK chart placing in brackets where applicable.

  • Explain your ticks (and your agonising decisions) in the comments!

  • [Poll #1411401]

How on earth is this not getting more votes? It's bloody awesome, my favourite grage track of the year, and they always sound like they're having such fun singing it. Great party track.

Oh man, ATC in the Top Ten by one vote! Except we're only going with the top five so symbolic win only.

Hang on, the percentages are all wrong. N'Sync has 60% from 18 votes, while Jay Z has 54% from 19 votes. The bars seem to be based on the %ages too, so it looks like N'Sync are more popular when they are not.

I'm trying to convince myself this is why 911 looks like it is doing so badly, but i am forced to the conclusion that i am in quite a serious minority in liking this song :-(

Don't worry about the percentages, since they're for each of the three subgroups, not for all the tracks as a whole. Percentages will be different for the different subgroups because not everyone picks tracks in all the subgroups, or the same number of tracks. *NSync and Jay-Z are in different subgroups. But we're going to choose our top five based on vote totals, not on percent.

I don't remember if I'd heard the Mumba or the All Saints track before. I ended up ticking the Mumba, 'cause of the two tracks its singsong and its soundscape were a bit more mesmerizing. But I found the each track similarly likable. So I'm wondering if anyone has insight as to why All Saints are slaughtering Mumba in the poll.

It probably helps that the All Saints one was a number one hit and played loads on the radio (in the UK), so I reckon more people remember it.

I much prefer the All Saints one anyway...although the other Mumba song, Gotta Tell You, which I think will be showing up later, is another matter entirely, it's a glorious record.

This isn't relevant to what I just said one way or another, but I can imagine several country singers doing "Body II Body" with only a slight change in the instrumentation: LeAnn Rimes, Faith Hill, Heidi Newfield, Rissi Palmer.

Plus, All Saints were a hugely successful girl group for years, whereas Mumba was a third-tier pop chick who disappeared after two singles.

The result I'm not entirely understanding is why 'Bye Bye Bye' is slaughtering 'Candy'!

"Candy" didn't hit big in the U.S., and I don't think Mandy ever got the ilX/Freaky Trigger attention that *NSync did, though historians may know better than I in that regard. I ticked 'em both.

What do you mean my "hit it big"? According to Wiki, it peaked at #41 on the Hot 100, yeah -- but I guarantee that if you say "You know who you are. Your love's as sweet as candy" in the general vicinity of any girl my age, 80% of them will very seriously reply, "I'll be forever yours. Love always, Mandy."

Yes, but how many of them will then say, "AND SO I JUST TICKED 'CANDY' ON HEAT ONE OF THE POPTIMISTS BEST SONGS OF 2000 POLL"? (But I do think "Candy" pulled in a good number of the North American votes here, though didn't get Chuck's or Mike's or Anthony's.)

Three quarters of the people who ticked "Candy" also ticked "Bye Bye Bye," whereas it doesn't hold the other way around. (But I'm not unhappy with our top five.)

It would have been my eleventh or twelfth tick, I think. But even if I'd ticked it I'd have unticked it if there was a chance of its beating "Big Pimpin'." But in general perhaps you could amend the rules to give people whose user names begin with "k" an extra five votes. ([livejournal.com profile] kellnasty seems to have good taste, and didn't use all ten of his/her ticks as it is.)

Oh, and Greg didn't vote for "Candy" either.

Eight North Americans voted for "Candy," seven Brits, and one Australian. I'm not quite compulsive enough to click on everyone's profile to see what percentage of the total number of voters is North American, what Brit, etc. (Well, I am compulsive enough, but I'm leaving for Connecticut in about 40 hours, so I need to pretend to prioritize my time between now and then.) But I know of 13 North Americans for sure, and I'm guessing there are not more than a couple of other North Americans among voters whose location I don't know, so I'd say that North America did well for "Candy," in comparison to the Brits. If the total vote for "Candy" had matched the North American percentage, it'd be right up there with "Big Pimpin'" fighting for the fifth spot. Of course, I prefer "Big Pimpin'," but I don't prefer "Country Grammar" or "Black Coffee" or "B.O.B."

I don't dislike "Candy" at all, it just got squeezed out by other stuff. I like other Mandy Moore stuff a lot better.

Looks like we're getting five pretty clear winners, so good job on the seeding/heat construction!

I'll just have you know I've listened to all of them. Not all of all of them. Listening to all of some of them (Goo Goo Dolls?) would surely be an exercise in masochism, but I listened to enough to judge. And for the reference of future biographers, who shall be fascinated to know why I picked these ones, it is because they are ones I'd be most likely to listen to again. I suspect that some I'd have to live with a bit longer than just half a play on Spotify to really like, and I suppose that'll affect my vote in the knock-out rounds. For example, Bye Bye Bye = I didn't really enjoy it as much as I thought I would given it involves Timberlake (he was in NSync yes?), so no vote. Big Pimpin' would probably grow for me in subsequent listens, but I put my vote elsewhere, alas. So I suppose that skews it somewhat towards the easy to digest teen pop, but I suspect those won't last to future rounds. However, I was greatly pleased to enjoy Craig David and Lil' Kim, not being previously familiar with these excellent choons.

Had to get my hometown/homestate votes in...

So Sara Evans and Nelly both received ticks. Nelly deserved it regardless.

I find it frightening that Jay-Z is only in fifth!

It seems like this page spillover thing is relatively new (or am I just crazy?), but why would LJ both create new pages AND do the stupid comment threading? Grrrrrrr. Fun convo, though, looking forward to the rest of the decade!
