To prevent our indecision taking us from behind (and my spreadsheet from melting), I have decided on the following method to determine the release year:

1. It made the UK top ten according to everyhit.co.uk
2. It made the UK top 40 according to everyhit (i.e. if it got re-released and made the top ten, we'd go for the year it was a bigger hit, cf Sonique)
3. Discogs UK release date
4. Discogs US release date
5. My werk database
6. Wikipedia/other interweb source

I know this is very UK-centric but it should all balance out by the end of the decade and prevent us having any Miley Cyrus difficulties later on :)

You've still got a few hours left to nominate! We're still missing A1's cover of 'Take On Me' and Bob The Builder...

I can def. see 'I got your money' winning this; it's the sort of thing with completely universal appeal. Also completely fkn ace, of course.

I'd best start hitting up Spotify then, because I sadly do not know this song (or many of the others, though I concede I may recognise them when I hear them...). Pls not to ban me from [livejournal.com profile] poptimists.

Dude, if we banned people for not knowing what songs were then I would definitely be out.

I think it's one of those 'you'd know it if you heard it' ones; it has Kelis on.

Argh yes. I worked in a trendy townie clothes shop at the time, and the music we played in the shop was a loop of about five songs, one of which was Thong Song, which drove me batty.

Actually, one of the other tracks in the loop was Pure Morning by Placebo, which is an absolute tune whatever your feelings about Placebo on. Any chance of getting it on the list?

Many, many contenders for second place, but I still think my no 1 on that list is 'Flowers'.

(Pedantry watch: that LOX song is spelled 'Ryde Or Die Bitch' - my fault, I misspelled it originally!)

I like the idea of doing really small groups, so we can actually hear each song before deciding what to vote for?

Razor-N-Guido - Do It Again
Phil Vassar - Carlene

These were both on 2000 albums -- Razor N' Guido Present Dancefloor and Phil Vassar respectively; I'm holding them in my hands and looking at the copywrite dates right now -- though apparently they were released as singles earlier. But since this is a poll of best songs, not best singles, I'm not sure why that would matter. Also, AMG says that, though "Carlene" hit the US Country chart in (presumably late) 1999, it didn't hit the Billboard Hot 100 until 2000. I think it belongs in the poll.

("Do It Again," according to AMG, hit the US Dance chart in 1998, so I won't quibble as much on that one.)

Date: 2009-06-02 02:36 pm (UTC)
koganbot: (Default)
From: [personal profile] koganbot
Well, "Carlene" only reached 45 on the Hot 100.

Kat, your number four should actually read:

"4. Discogs US release date (except when someone else points out when the song hit the U.S. charts, but I can't be bothered to do this myself)"

Date: 2009-06-02 04:39 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] chuckeddy.livejournal.com
Though what the heck, if it's not too late, I will also nominate these two other singles from Phil Vassar's 2000 album, even though the second one wasn't actually a single until 2001 (which is where I would have nominated it before the rules started to confuse me so much.) (But actually, it's probably too late anyway, right?)

Phil Vassar -- Another Day In Paradise
Phil Vassar - Six-Pack Summer

btw if it's not too late i'd like to add a couple::

Aztec Mystic - Jaguar
#43 in Oct 2000, over a year after original release

Kraftwerk - Expo 2000 (KK2001 mix, Orbital mix and DJ Rolando mixes all great...should I specify a mix?)
#27 in March 2000

Kat - Destiny's Child's "Jumpin' Jumpin'" doesn't seem to be on any of your lists here (as opposed to the Beta Band's "Jumpin' Jumpin'") but it was quite definitely nominated, by at least two people.

In fact, the Beta Band song that was nominated was "To You Alone," and the Destiny's Child song came right after it on the list. I assume you've long since sorted this, but I just wanted to alert you in case you hadn't.
