So there's Europe, Asia and America and of course Mu; what other continental (real or otherwise, this is anthropology not geography innit) band names are there?

(I'll swear there's a sort of doom-metal band called Pangea but I may just be confused about Earth or something)

For the minute, let's consider the fact this song by Asia, wot was on Planet Rock (world's greatest radio station outside of Kiss reception, etc.) last night whilst I was doing the washing up, is very good:

Also by the way, do you think we should make the community layout more aesthetically pleasing? I know most people read it through their flists but it might encourage new members and that. [ETA: I have changed the layout to nice clean'n'simple one I found in the auto-settings THINGER; if people hate it completely then I will change it back but I think it's quite nice and certainly the font's a lot easier to read, for me at least; I might put a header on it with one of our Poptimism logos or something if I'm feeling very procrastinatory next week]

Oh and can [livejournal.com profile] carsmilesteve and [livejournal.com profile] strange_powers plz email me their blurby bits for ORGAFUN. Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] infov0re, [livejournal.com profile] weasel_seeker and [livejournal.com profile] jeff_worrell for sending theirs. :)

Ahahaha tick vg would somersault over again :) Actually my favourite bit is at the end where the gymnast just gives up and starts jumping over the tellys in a relatively normal fashion.

Back in the nineties, Select devoted of their fantastic double-page whimsies to bands with geographical names, proving an inverse correlation between the size of the place and the quality of the band.

Europe, Asia and America were all evidence for the prosecution. I think the Easterhouse estate was described as "actually vast".

Dammit, pipped!! And I was thinking of "small and bastard-hard" Easterhouse too. ISTR this as a muted approval for Easterhouse.

Also their observation that Warsaw is quite big, which explains why Warsaw were quite rub compared to Joy Division.

I wish I had a copy to scan. That, and the flowchart which proved that every musician who'd ever lived was at most six degrees away from Johnny Marr.

There are, I think, at least TWO bands called Pangea, the other of which was an obscure late '90s goth band.

I believe that there is also Ultima Thule. Inevitable, really.

This reminds me of an ancient Select article about band names derived from places. The rule of thumb seemed to be "the bigger the place, the crapper the band".

I think the comm layout is fine, but I do only read it through my f-list so don't know if that's much use.

Oh, ISTR hearing about them. I forgot them.

I think the Select thing was *meant* to be humorous. But may have been more humorous than intended? Damn, I wish I'd not lost almost all my old 90s music mags!

As for continental landmasses, I think you have most of them covered. However in a broader sense of techtonics you also have:

DJ Krust (responsible for one of my favourite 2 minutes of dnb ever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74-lJAaaPIA&feature=related))
Hot Lava (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG70rsLUjfQ) (ropey early B52s track)
Marianas Trench (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqPn8a4gT2Y) (bouncey emo-rock from a few years ago)

OK that's some straw-clutching right there.

Geologists have been making most of these up for a larff obviously but a couple of those names sound promisingly metallic.

No, looks fine! It looks very similar to an old skool scheme I used to use for FT back in 2000/1 actually!

Me dad is a geologist & oceanographer.

Tis OK, he is *quite* barking - he too has a casual attitude towards personal safety, like poking giant poisonous sea snakes when diving...

Afrika Bambaataa?

There's also a dubstep producer called Pangaea - 'Router' was one of my favourite tracks last year, and my friends Tom and Miriam got him to play at their dubstep/techno night about a month ago:

Ooh, lovely! Very soothing. Almost made me fall asleep with niceness, but that may also be the weather and the fact I'm sitting in bed.
