Songs played in music halls, but I think also songs that originated in the music hall scene - the halls survived into the 60s but a lot of their material by then was coming in from films (or pop!)

OIC. this makes me imagine some dreadful episode of restoration where they revive an old music hall and fill it with the pigeon detectives. NOES.

it all seems dead awful to mine delicate young ears. then again it is before lunch so i am feeling misanthropic. and it is also all a bit jolly, which obvs. means it totally loses points in my eyes.

I think the jolly or nonsensical stuff has endured more than the emo stuff, which was a big part of music hall fare - but was in the hypersentimental death-of-little-nell style the Victorians dug and which has aged poorly on the whole. (Check "She Was Poor But She Was Honest")

but don't forget a LOT of that CD (and music hall) is nod-and-wink about teh sechs -- there's a gracie fields which totally mocks "poor but honest" tho i can't recall it at the moment

thisd can get a bit wearing also, but it's it's less annoying the the mimsy prurience of so much indie, emo etc

There's also a lot of it which was realism-in-comic-guise about alcoholism, bad partners, poverty etc. (Or so my book on MH informed me! Marie Lloyd did a lot of this as well as the salty naughty stuff)

that's what i mean tho, it's that sort of gritty realism-disguised-in-jaunt that things like everyone's least favourite band ever SFG are attempting to reproduce. we're in the throes of poss. depression-related dystopian music hall revival y/y?
