I'm off to the supermarket now apparently but just time to tell you there's a Now Poll here and it'd be jolly good if we could all fill it in and have the usual discussion etc. I thought I might do both of last years (all three of last years? I have no idea how these things work) in the next week/fortnight/thingy as a way of clearing the air of 2008/having a little retrospective and then we can get back to the srs work of sorting out how mental Beyonce is going to go with her videos and that.

By the way, if anyone doesn't have any idea what these Now Poll things are, since they've become something of a rarity; basically you tick the boxes next to the songs you think are reasonably listenable on this particular volume of the NOW [number] compilation CDs and then we tot all the votes up (or well, lj does this for us) and the winnar of the compilation gets inducted into the pop hall of fame in the userinfo. It's fairly obvious who's going to win this one but you never know.

[Poll #1330928]

EDIT: god, I always forget something. Err. Will tally up votes for best and worst track from comments.

There may be worse tracks (The Script?, DJ Q which sounds terribly unpromising), but I didn't remember them. 'No Air' was inescapable all year and irritated the shit out of me. 'Low' - just hideous.

DJ Q is brilliant (if you like Bassline, that is)

what is hideous about 'low'? the beat is so kinetic and A+ fun to dance to, it's like a rollercoaster; the hook is catchy as hell and brilliant to sing along to (APPLE BOTTOM JEANS! BOOTS WITH THE FURRR!), Flo Rida rides it all pretty well. it's easily one of the biggest tunes of the year and was a staple of street dancing class, and never got old.

The vocals, especially the "low low low low low" part.

Best: No Air ("No Air" was #3 on my tracks list, "Love Song" was #4, and "Love In This Club" was #8 or 9, I forget).

Worst: Scouting For Girls

Best: American Boy, I guess...

Worst: It has to be The Script, holding off strong competition from serial offenders Kooks and Scouting For Girls. But The Script add many dimensions of badness of their own.

Oh, it was okay, can't say I have any real feeling for or antipathy toward it!

Best track Estelle (closely followed by Scooter, Wiley, DJ Q and Mariah).

Worst track is the Script, but Toca's Miracle 2008 runs a close second.

This is an GREAT Now, loads of classics but some representative dross to remind us that this year's chart wasn't all roses. The last third is pretty awesome (save for the two worst tracks + Basshunter).

Ha. These were the two I hadn't ticked in Year In Pop that I did tick this time: the Estelle because I finally decided that the glideyness of the track compensated for Estelle's finishing school mannerisms, the Black Kids because I decided that by concentrating on the lamely touching vocals I could blot out the dysfunctionally frenetic rhythm.

The song is deceptively not raw, since her voice actually has a lot of bite to it. Was disappointed with the album, though, which is a collection of her European hits released for the American market. Her voice is good enough so that with good material she'll likely always be interesting.
