I never felt carols as religious at Christmas. I did realise that whoever wrote hymns saved up all their best tunes for December, but we weren't a Christian household and listening to carols was never a spiritual thing, just a happy thing. This was always a favourite carol, and last year I was introduced to this particularly good, straightforward 50s version of it:
