[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] poptimists
The end of the year is of course POLL SEASON, and we'll be striking the bandwagon while the cakes are hot. If you've been lurking on Poptimists or have given up on polling now is a superb chance to change your ways!

As last year the poll will be in two bits: the TRACKS OF 2008 POLL and the REST OF IT.

To vote in the Tracks of 2008 you need to send your Top 10 Tracks of 2008 to leagueofpop@gmail.com. That's all! The tracks you send will be alloted POINTS in eurovision style (12-10-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1) and then we will post the winners. Deadline for this is Sunday 14th, i.e. in 2 weeks time.

To vote in the Rest Of It just fill in the 5 categories below, and I will use the Poptimizer (pictured in icon) to create NOMINEES which we will vote on. Deadline for this is whenever I get round to starting it. (The plan is to do these next week and the tracks the week after: I know something amazing might appear in the last cpl weeks of the year but sod it, lists are more fun pre-demob). Oh, and if you want to nominate more than one thing, DO!

[Poll #1307213]

HAPPY POLLING!

Ooo can we have a Artist/Group of the Year category as well or is that too much faff? I want to nominate Kanye West as he has been all over the place innit, but I don't think he deserves a lifetime thing just yet.

Also ARGH ARGH how can I decide my tracks without days and days of hand-wringing etc :)

With the Tracks of 2008 poll in mind, I really really really want to urge everyone to revisit my funky house (http://community.livejournal.com/poptimists/607375.html) post to check out the tracks there, all of which are from 2008, because right now it looks like the various funky anthems are comprising half my top 10.

Half of my current top 25 are bassline tracks from Jan/Feb!

The Wookie/Ny track is lurking around my top 25. I am almost certainly going to hurl out Sia in favour of it.

I am slightly disturbed to discover I have listened to very little Actual New Music this year. :/

I have basically chalked this year up to a loss in music (due to business at the beginning of the year I got way way behind and never came close to catching up). But I've heard enough to scrape together a top 10 tracks list, so I'll try to do some cramming over the next couple of days. n.b. I nominated Katy Perry for most horrible and most interesting pop thing of the year.

Here's a cheat sheet: best Taylor single "Should've Said No," best new Taylor single "You're Not Sorry," best new Britney "Kill The Lights" though it isn't a single*, best Ashlee single "Little Miss Obsessive" and "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" (tie), best new Ne-Yo single "Miss Independent" (though I took a while to figure this out), best country single not by Taylor Willie Nelson's "You Don't Think I'm Funny Anymore," best Paris Hilton single "My BFF," best single that only I seem to like Heidi Montag "No More," best Auto-Tune Rihanna "Disturbia," best single by a group that only Tom and I are paying attention to at the moment Buraka Som Sistema "Kalemba (Wegue Wegue)," best Brooke White "Love Is A Battlefield" (though I know you prefer "Let It Be"), possibly best country album track Ashton Shepherd "Whiskey Won The Battle," best remix the Pete Hammond Mix of Alphabeat's "Boyfriend," best hip-hop track V.I.C. "Wobble," best track by someone with testicles also V.I.C. "Wobble," second-best track by someone with testicles Willie Nelson "The Bob Song," second-best hip-hop track The Knux "Cappuccino," grime track that everyone here has been talking about and might well win the poll "Wearing My Rolex," best new Miley "Fly On The Wall," and I think owing to its late arrival in Britain "See You Again" is eligible for this poll, though I already voted it last year so won't vote it again.

*For this poll I vote tracks rather than just singles, I'm not sure why, since for P&J I'm sticking with singles.

Will check these out. I prefer "Goodbye" for Miley. I only prefer "Let It Be" because she took a song I hated and made me love it whereas her "Love Is a Battlefield" is only a little better than the original. Need to listen to Ne-Yo and Danity Kane and Britney for sure though and will also catch up on country via the rolling country thread (I bought the Montgomery Gentry album but still haven't heard it yet).

Haha I love 'Miss Independent' but I think it's the worst of the Gentleman singles! Which says more about that album's strength, really. For me, the singles go Single > Mad > Closer > Miss Independent.

"Single" didn't make that much of an impression on me when I listened the album (finally) on Sunday. It is indeed a great LP though. My favourite non-single so far is "So You Can Cry", but that does have a more E-Z listening feel to it so that's not too surprising.

Lil' Mama's L.I.F.E. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QObJLMWM2FI): Not the best video, but most interesting in terms of a 180 from previous year's hit video!

and a vote from you for MGMT in the MOST HORRIBLE category will pretty much guarantee they make the shortlist ;)
