Ladies and gentlemen we have a new number one! We truly are living in exciting times when Kings Of Leon can get to the top spot. Hmmm.
Elsewhere, Miley is slowly sneaking up towards the top 10, Skepta's Rolex Sweep enters at no.89, and Bonnie Tyler is this week's inexplicable new entry at 57 thanks to Total Eclipse Of The Heart being cheaply dubbed over that Phil Collins gorilla advert.

Date: 2008-09-15 01:12 pm (UTC)Kings Of Leon - any time an indie boy sings about sex it is turgid and grim, this is no exception. Reminds me of Bruce Springsteen ughhh
Cliff Richard - continues to represent a massive amount of wrong things about the general cultural landscape of this miserable island
Iglu & Hartly - got 10 seconds in
McFly - charmless and pointless as ever
Basshunter - fuck OFF
Queen - hang on I thought they were dead? I have always thought that they were pretty much the worst band in existence
Sonny J - what a totally incompetent mess of a record. Go Team comparison otm. Why can people not just DO THINGS PROPERLY
thank christ for Flo Rida and MIA! even if the latter is like 94944 years old now and actually, thinking about why it's a success now is just as depressing as contemplating the artistic merits of the songs above.
Still, the Flo Rida is really terrific - all aboard the freestyle revival! It's all about the robot girl backing vox in the last few choruses. "Oh hot DAMN. This is my JAM. Keep me partying 'til the AY EM. Y'all don't underSTAND. Make me throw my HANDS in the ayer, ayer, AY-AYERRRR." My hip-hop dance tutor has taken to playing in our classes and it's really awesome to dance to. This should be mashing the competition.

Date: 2008-09-15 01:14 pm (UTC)Kings Of Leon "Sex On Fire": Rhythm that doesn't lose its roll, dark chords, bits of dissonance, but the voice is dull. Lots of variation in the arrangement, crowded here, empty there, but the result is monolithic anyway, and monotonous. NO TICK.
Cliff Richard "Thank You For A Lifetime": Not enough voice left to deliver the triumph of the chorus, but the arrangement insists that he can, so the whole thing seems like an impersonation. NO TICK.
Iglu and Hartly "In This City": The beginning is unexpected: desiccated keyboards, weird high voice, sound effects, a very strange dance track is about to emerge. Instead, really mediocre rap 'n' rock. NO TICK. Ack! They're from Boulder.
McFly "Lies": Somewhere between rollicking and painful, this coalesces in a soulful chorus, high passion like the Dells. It's terribly over-arranged, however, weighed down by strings and horns and power chords. But they've got the song and harmonies, bless 'em. TICK.
Basshunter "Angel In The Night": This is my light in the dark, this is the beating in my heart, but it's not quite enough. BORDERLINE NONTICK.
Flo Rida f. Will.I.Am "In The Ayer": Fast moody synths, happy hooks, nice combo of light and dark, but the rapping in the verses is so weak. There's no law that songs have to have verses, guys. BORDERLINE TICK.
Queen & Paul Rodgers "C-Lebrity": Tired.
M.I.A. "Paper Planes": Shoots bullets, makes us dance, takes our money. All I wanna do is TICK TICK TICK TICK.
Sonny J. "Can't Stop Moving": Nice chorus, the rest is nothing. BORDERLINE NONTICK.

Date: 2008-09-15 01:19 pm (UTC)Cliff: BLIMEY he's nicked the hook from 'Downtown' for the chorus. My boss has just pissed himself laughing at this in the office. It's dreadful obv but quite endearing. If Cliff turns out to actually be the Messiah we're all buggered, but I'm still not ticking this.
Iglu: these people's voices are VERY grating. Chorus is insubstantial and the rapping is poor. I am turning this off right now.
McFly: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA dudes you have to watch this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ySZt73Gcw4) it's hilarious. Post-apocalyptic Mad Max tastic! Actually possibly more like Tank Girl. Anyway, McFly must sing to earn some clean water. Song's ok, though I'm sure one of them just said 'fvcking' before the boogie-woogie fight sequence so I can't not tick this. Why don't more people make videos like this?
Basshunter: woez how I weep for 1995 :(
Flo & Will: Lame reworking of an ancient 80s electro hit that I can't quite identify. I am bored of Will.i.am's face.
Queen: I think I'll give thsi one a miss.
MIA: Yay! Bout time.
Sonny J: I do wonder sometimes why people sample the worst/most-annoying bits of songs when there is so much good music out there to use instead? And sometimes even in the same song? Anyway, this has been hanging around for Some Months Now and has shrunk on me even more :(
AMAZING X 10 BILLION
