Some movement in the top ten at last! Kid Rock has turfed Dizzee off the top spot, the Script have whinged their way up to number 3 and Katy Perry's questionable ode to lesbianism is the highest new entry at 4 (its bosh remix is at no.50!), making this week's poll an aptly all-girl affair...

Yeah the way this crops up repeatedly (or...at least twice, I haven't heard anything beyond this and 'Ur So Gay') makes you go HMMM, or at least it would if you weren't busy going AAARGH.

You know, the vague homophobia really isn't what offends me about this - it's definitely there, but, you know, I like dancehall, I can't talk. And I think it's a really potentially interesting angle. But the presentation is so stupid and smug and muddle-headed and STUPID and STUPIDSTUPIDSTUPID.

Well, the situation itself is kind of interesting. "I kissed a girl and I liked it -- uh oh." That's a genuine reaction. But Katy herself isn't selling this as a personal drama, even as a funny one -- she's selling at as something that should make you snicker a little. And by comparison, she wants you to have a nice big laugh at "UR So Gay" (the ending, which I hadn't noticed on first listen... "you don't even like....PENIS!!!!"). But she isn't painting a situation that's actually FUNNY. There's something a little sad, and potentially touching, about the scenario as she defines it -- she did something impulsive thinking of her boyfriend, turns out it was really about her. Except with the comedy, she really really wants it to be about the boyfriend. (If Katy understood, or even attempted to convey, an idea that the problem is HER, I might actually like repressive etc. etc., because it's an interesting viewpoint in terms of confessional angst. But it's NOT interesting as an obvious joke.)
