Nouvelle Vague - "A Forest"
Bossanova (or pseudo-bossa, like I'd know!) cover of The Cure song whose success lies in the answer it gives to the original's hidden problem: what kind of a mug is Bob Smith if he keeps falling for this vanishing girl anyway? "It's always the same / I'm running towards nothing / Again and again and again" - fair enough, it's a dream, but Nouvelle Vague's version manages to sound dreamy, even better! Their forest is an enchanted wood, not just some subconscious tangle of bassy scrub, genuinely alluring even if the breathy frenchness of the singer is un peu trop.
