I had a delightful experience in my office the other day. We have the work PA system in our keeping and towards the end of the day we sometimes plug our ipods in to play stuff - on this occasion our lovely temp Matt asked if I had any bootlegs. Surely I do, I thought, and then found that the only one I'd actually uploaded was Osymyso's "Intro Inspection". I played it, and gratifyingly saw everyone's face light up with bafflement and wonder. It reminded me how exciting and fun the bootleg 'scene' was back in 2002. Now it's seen as a bit of a joke or an embarassment, partly due to the flood of poor-quality mash-ups that followed, partly because most of the original bootleg makers gave it up for 'proper' DJing ASAP. And no doubt a bunch of other factors were involved - there always seemed to be plenty of people who hated bootlegs.

Anyhow they're still being made, of course. Here's a Christmas one!

I have an amazing bootleg which I keep meaning to post as a YSI here: it takes two singles (one indie, one pop) which were quite big but not all that great from this year, and makes them into something which is very all that great.

I NEED to get the acapella of Montell Jordan's 'This Is How We Do It' to make a really obvious one that occurred to me only last week. No it is not Christmas themed.

In HMV Oxford at the weekend I saw lots of 12" repressings of 'Def Jam Classics' including the aforementioned Jordan track. Brilliantly lots of these have both instrumental and acapella on them. And I need to hunt a few more down for future installments of my Ultramix series.

The INXS-to-Dexys transition in Intro Inspection is still genius. As would the Teen Spirit-to-Staying-Alive be, if it wasn't clear how much they had to beat up the sample to do it.

I've always disliked the Whitney Houston/Pink Panther part in 'Intro Inspection'.

Fun fact: The most obscure track featured in 'Intro Inspection' is Kowkube's 'If It Ain't Country It Ain't Music', the intro of which is often mistaken in this track for The Monkees 'I'm A Believer' (see also Bauhaus 'Bela Lugosi's Shed'/Bob Marley's 'No Woman No Cry').
