sutherland brothers and quiver just came up on popular -- they did the original version of rod the mod's "sailing" and THIS is the fact i wish to advert to: "In an effort to diversify and expand their folk based sound, the Sutherland Brothers joined forces with a local rock band known as Quiver"

question A: OK did anyone else ever do this? I mean two bands combine so that the name was just the addition of the two earlier names?
question B: who SHOULD have done it? (viz "pere ubu and the fatback band")

What was the final name? You don't mention it.

And of course it's been done before. I mean, it's well known that Pink Anderson and Floyd Council joined forces to create Pink Floyd....

Guns and Roses formed when members of L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose started another band together. Does that count?

I am pleased that Poptimists have worked out what this qn actually IS unlike the people on the comments thread just listing duets!

I still think SAM AND MARK count - two completely unrelated failed Pop Idol contestants yoked together (apparently forever) in a great-news-for-all-our-listeners tactic.

Obviously for the great news parallel to be exact then only Quiver's drummer and harmonica player would have survived into the new band and the Quiver bit of the name would be quietly dropped 6 months later (before a further merger with MOON)

How about the reverse, when members of original progenitor group drop out, so band shortens name in recognition of their absence?

E.g., Jefferson Starship --> Starship

Isn't Unit Four Plus Two's name derived something like this? i.e. there was a band called Unit Four and then they added two members leading to a thrilling rebranding.
