Radcliffe and Maconie have been caning "Grounds for Divorce". Heard it so many times now it's become lodged in my brain, although its catchiness isn't obvious at first.

Nothing else here worth a tick, I fear.

'Grounds For Divorce' is a real grower, although I also have some love for Foals and Mystery Jets (if only for Laura Marling's excellent guest vocals).

yeah I like her vocals.

it's odd, I know LM's cousin and have been aware of her for years now, and now she's, like, famous! and tipped for the top! and in the top 40!

Is 'Cassius' about the actual duo Cassius being second to Daft Punk?

Hercules and Love Affair obv superb - the club mix is even better and the Frankie Knuckles mix also excellent, but the og is great too. Total anthem of 08. Saw Andrew Butler DJ in Phonica last week, he was awesome, though we were the only ones dancing. Funny to realise how much I love Antony hegarty's voice on the H&LA album - previously he'd irritated me beyond belief. Seems like he was born to be a disco diva.

All of this week's new entries are ghastly. Aren't Panic At The Disco supposed to be emo? This sounds like bad Britpop. I really like the Elbow singer's voice but the song is so insubstantial as to barely exist. I have no idea what Erol is doing associating with the Mystery Jets, you certainly couldn't tell from the sound that he'd produced it (though props to Laura Marling, whose album I must check out) (fun Laura Marling fact: the first time I saw her live was at the same gig infamous Shimura Curves on-stage split-up). Foals are truly, truly dreadful.

I still can't get past Antony Hegarty's voice, I love the production and tune, but his voice just grates.

Panic! At The Disco recorded their new album at Abbey Road and it supposedly has a "Beatles" feel to it. I heard the song yesterday for the first time and was thoroughly unimpressed. "Bad Britpop" just about sums it up.

That's what "A Beatles feel to it" is code for!

Haha that doesn't narrow it down much Was she performing as herself?

yes, she's always performed as Laura Marling. it was the pamflet party at the social, you might have been there? or not.

Nah, if it was the real actual onstage breakup I'd decided to take a break for a little while.

Hilariously Leona has failed to get to Number One with her chair-rity single because you can download the double-A side Better In Time + Footprints and the single-track Footprints separately (the latter reaching an admirable No.23 on its own). Whoops!

I don't understand how Footprints being available for separate download makes any difference to whether or not the single made number one?

Well, if they'd only released the charity double-A, dudes would have had to have bought that to get their mitts on Footprints. Though I don't know if sales for No.2 + No. 23 put together are actually higher than sales for Duffy.

This dude (http://uk.launch.yahoo.com/charts/comment.html) seems to imply that they are, although stops short of saying so explicitly. There is however a lengthy commentary on how this result has occured.

The same thing happened to Shayne Ward, I think - he ended up with a No.2 double-a and one of the songs being in the Top 30 on its own, although I was quite happy for him not to have had a No.1.

Turning our attention to higher things

Hercules - Still not sure about his voice but the disco is good. Tick.

Panic - I like the video! It has a golden ELEFUNT in it. However I don't like the way he says "moooooon" and "afternooooooon", like he's doing his best Michael Stipe impression but forgot to sing through his nose. The song is very Sergant Pepper isn't it? Hence the marching band I guess. Borderline non-tick, although... I'm willing to be convinced further? Someone tell me why they like this!

Elbow - I really like their first album which this sounds NOTHING like. Guy is still possibly the worst looking frontman of any band I own a record by. Hmm, what a strange song this is! No identifiable chorus but a good verse that demands one; bluesy but without any meaty riffs to sit upon. Again, borderline non-tick, I could be convinced with repeated listens perhaps.

Leona - Disappointing after the reasonably-good-ness of Bleedin' Luv.

Foals - errrr it's quite energetic? Dudes, standing around beneath actual BLOODY HEARTS dangling on strings is not a good incentive to keep watching! The lyrics are clunking and awful - what's this 'second verse' business? Also there appears to be something wrong with all of their haircuts. Never-tick.

Mystery Jets - Whereas this video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=qz-FoGp3p0s) is good! But why couldn't they have Laura sing the whole lead vocal? She has a much greater contrast with the noodley backing and lifts the song out of the doledrums. Actually the duet bits are good too. Worthy of a tick, at least.

Hard-Fi - They are the new Stereophonics, aren't they? There's an Axwell electro-blip mix (http://youtube.com/watch?v=s6SVVyaH2Fs&feature=related) of this which is slightly less dull but not much.

elbow seem to be getting better, but still not tickable (also, it's still fun to shout "elbow? ARSE MORE LIKE")

foals i've heard about half a dozen times without a single note of it sticking

so "don't like any" it is...

Duffy sold 40778, Leona got to number 2 with 40476 and Footprints sold 7525. So there only needs to be 300 people who downloaded Footprints but not Better in Time for it to have outsold Duffy if they had been packaged together.

Only Mystery Jets was tickable out of that lot, and even that's not going to feature in any end of year countdowns.
