What's Chinese pop music like? I want to know now before Alexis Petridis annoys me tomorrow by finding the Szechuan Bis or somesuch and laughing at their funny name.

DDD is right as far as my limited experience goes! Dude I have no time right now - I can up you some songs this evening maybe! I actually don't really know much cantopop but have some links people have shown me that I haven't really mined that I can chuck at you when I get home. Jay Chou I hear lots about but there's this other guy I like (whose name I totally can't remember) who apparently does sound a lot like him but I dunner...

This very very comprehensive post from the old PJ forums gives a great (although 3 years out of date now) overview of Chinese pop:

I found out about the Faye Wong song that i submitted in the League of Pop via that.

Lots of what in the West would be classified as girly/twee/easy listening indiepop (Feist, Keren Ann, etc. big sellers over there). Rap is starting to see some mainstream acceptance too.

Like, the Carpenters and anything that sounds like the Carpenters have always been popular. As per Wong Kar Wai, the Mamas and Papas are "rock" and "edgy". Other guesses for artists mainland Chinese would like are Rilo Kiley (the buffed-up latter day version) and Taylor Swift.

When I was there (3 or 4 years ago) everyone liked Jay. I was more of a fan of S.H.E. tho. Bouncy girly pop, occassionally a bit of rock, it was just fun.

Imported music in China was a very odd selection. Lots of obscure metal bands sitting alongside Aqua... I feel this explains a lot.
