Duffy, H20 and Nickelback are still refusing to budge from the top 3, so what's new in the chart this week? Almost a clean sweep for indie, that's what.

[Poll #1151744]

(Westlife were cruelly omitted from last week's poll! Tom, how could you?)

Hmm, so much for listening to Radio 1 all day at work - I still can't identify any of these songs! (I do know that the Ting Tings are rubbish though.)

Thanks Kat!

Tho you missed Hercules And Love Affair's "Blind", sneaking in at 40 - I will remember that one for next week.

also remember to do the "which one do you like the best" qn! (for the record, mine would've been Hercules And Love Affair this week.)

also ALSO off topic but Tom did you know you're in the wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Break_the_ice) for the new Britney single?

OK dudes have you SEEN the video for 'Denial' (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Q4vJ8ZdmIvA)?? It's...amazing! Some really interesting costumery, some WHOA visuals, a really effective cabaret vibe going on, and what is with that weird and awesome stop motion filming? It's a good song too - solid rather than amazing, but as ever their voices stop it from being boring. There's something really deep and bassy about the production across the whole of that album which I can't put my finger on - it sounds very booming.

Re: the others, apart from Doug Walker; I have heard songs from each of them before and I simply do not believe that any of them are capable of making anything worthwhile. Didn't bother.

Re: Doug Walker - I lasted eight seconds before being seized with the urge to KIIILLLLLL.

I wouldn't go that far - how soon we all forget 'Easy' and 'Shape' - but it does surprise me that they put in this much creative and physical effort for this song, cf 'About You Now' which was a really AMAZING song but which, iirc, had a video consisting entirely of the Sugababes standing on staircases wearing yellow dresses and sticking their arses out.

'Shape' is a good song!

I like 'Denial.' I didn't find it that awesome when I bought the album but it's grown on me, although it could RLY do with someone like Mutya on the chorus to belt it out.

I find it bizarre that 'Never Gonna Dance Again' hasn't been a single yet.

The album never did grow on me really.

"Shape" is awesome, Lex grrr

"Denial" is OK I suppose, but they could do so much better. So no tick. Which means for the first time ever I'm gonna have to tick "Don't Like Any".

And the result would have been the same if Kat had remembered to include "Blind".

Oh I really like the bridge and the verses though - actually I really like the chorus APART FROM the really lame cop-out focus-on-last-word ending, which does drag the song down a bit.

I don't understand why they've released that track from the new GC.WC.F. album when the rest of it is really amazing. I mean, that one's alright but as a 'Chronicles...' album track sort of thing, not as the lead single from a Nitin Sawhney-produced piece o gorgeousness.

Jimmy Eat World have become a lovely sort of mumemo band (although that said they always were really) and We Are Scientists are still quite hot.

I'd suggest taking out the Not Heard Any from these polls too. I mean why bother voting if you haven't heard any really? It doesn't make you any less of a Poptimist...OR DOES IT?

if you find yourself ticking it more than say once a month - b/c we do get some awfully whatever weeks - I would question whether you're actually interested in pop music.

If you find yourself ticking it more than once a month, you are probably American.

From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
the Americans still seem to be more up on their pop than some of the Britons! also they have better taste.

It's in there to keep the stats level, so that a song which does OK in an obscure week doesn't emerge with a huge percentage score.

Date: 2008-03-10 02:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com
And I wish MORE people would tick it, rather than not fill in the poll, cos if you don't fill in the poll and there's something AWESOME in it, how will you know w/o seeing the results?

Date: 2008-03-10 02:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com
well you can always read the comments!

having said all that, the only reason i don't tick it is because this poll motivates me to listen to itunes clips - 'Denial' is the only one of these i'd heard before that and not all the way thru!

Date: 2008-03-10 02:55 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
yeah I find it baffling that people look at these polls every week and tick "not heard any" without ever apparently thinking "ooh I'd like to check that out".

Date: 2008-03-10 02:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com
ah, but then there's the remembering to do it when you get somewhere you can listen to music...

WESTLIFE - They've pretty much become the Jandek of pop, haven't they? Remorselessly undifferentiated mid-pace grind as per. NO TICK.

WE ARE SCIENTISTS - Can't decide whether to go for goofy or epic, lands awkwardly betwixt. NO TICK.

FUTUREHEADS - There seems to be simultaneously too much going on in this and not enough i.e. the sound's thickness bogs the song down, and there's not enough ideas in it. NO TICK.

GET CAPE WEAR CAPE FLY - Preferred it before the shuffley beat came in and took us to DavidGrayville, bot NO TICK either way.

SUGABABES - This is nothing extra special but it's OK, I quite like the chorus, which is *really* reminding me of some old 80s (I think) tune. The backing is a bit Sleeper. TICK, especially in this week's line-up.

DOUG WALKER - Jesus someone's found a way to breed Coldplay and the Hoosiers. STOP THIS EVIL GM FILTH. NO TICK.

JIMMY EAT WORLD - Not in the mood for this rly. Best of this week's guitar stuff tho. NO TICK.

I ARE INDIEISTS

it might be even their most pop in 'structure' too. hence 1st single off new material.

Only one tick, would have been two with Hercules, and Sugababes are still under consideration. I realize that most of you have history with Westlife that I don't, but what's supposed to be the problem with this particular song? Not astonishingly great, but would be a good track on a Backstreet Boys album.

Westlife "Us Against The World": A pretty song, light singing that nonetheless puts out. Very nice. Best thing on list. TICK

We Are Scientists "After Hours": Wall of noodle. Vocals and everything else are congealed. Was expecting a lot better. NO TICK

Futureheads "The Beginning Of The Twist": Garage-rock chords and rough vocals fight for recognition amidst dense, swirling sound. Hank Ballard fans express disappointment. NO TICK

Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly "Find The Time": I will concede that a voice like this can be effective: high and swallowing itself but somehow being huskily sensitive, sometimes deliberately straining beyond its range. But the tune is lame, so the vocal mannerisms seem just that: mannered. NO TICK

Sugababes "Denial": Another song where voices fight for recognition, this time in competition with hard offbeats, strong guitars, big drums. Strange and interesting, and I may go back and tick this, but I'm not enjoying the sound. [Lex, it seems to me that Rihanna did this much more successfully on "Breaking Dishes," "Shut Up And Drive," and "Lemme Get That," the first two of which you had trouble with. What do you think that "Denial" is doing better, or those two were doing worse?]: BORDERLINE NONTICK

Doug Walker "The Mystery": OK hook, the voice is characterless at first, then gets somewhat poignant as it heads for the upper register. Not as worthless as it seemed at the start, but poignancy not enough to carry this beyond the mediocrity of the material. NO TICK

Jimmy Eat World "Always Be": Whine and jangle meet, neutralize each other. NO TICK

Well, I'm going to evoke the Boney Joan Rule here and say that whine goes well with jangle if you're the long-ago Byrds or Big Star, or occasionally when you're R.E.M., but generally not.

it's the voices! Rihanna's voice is flat and kind of monotonous (in a good way), so flat and monotonous music just doesn't serve her well at all. The Sugababes' harmonies are always light and high and slightly ethereal, so flat and monotonous music has the effect of grounding them just enough for the song to work.
