Some hot new viddos
Mar. 5th, 2008 01:25 pmFour videos from MGMT, Jay-Z, MIA & Angolan chums and Justice. The Jay-Z one is noteworthy for not featuring the man himself (a first for a still-alive mega rap star??). The Justice one is glorious 80s graphic-typographer PORN in the same way 'D.A.N.C.E.' was for animtion and indie fashion designers.

Date: 2008-03-05 04:28 pm (UTC)MGMT "Time To Pretend": Lyrics are seemingly dumb satire (or even dumber nonsatire) that I'm kind of enjoying anyway: e.g., the excess they're parodying doesn't work but the urge for such excess remains, and then the urge for the abandoned stability of being protected and taken care of. Big buoyant drums are as big as the pretty harmonies they accompany, but the washed-out shitty vocals undercut the prettiness far too much. And who cares about the problems of such youth anyway? Might be a tick, but wouldn't be a download.
Jay-Z f. Pharrell "I Know": Jay-Z pushing his ebullience against the subtle beats is kind of interesting, but this isn't clicking for me, at least on first listen. (Not paying much attention to the video, but WTF?)
Buraka Som Sistema f. M.I.A. "Sound Of Kuduro": Ah, I like this, teeth-shifting vocals, while grating instruments manage to lilt and smile. Just the right bag of snakes for M.I.A.'s chanting, I'd think, but she sounds out-of-place and hobbled. But her vocals aren't the main ones and aren't central enough to entirely defeat the track, either. I'm going to try and hunt this down.
Justice "DVNO": Murky, with bits of barbed wire and flicks of formaldehyde and the usual strained vocals. I've nothing in principle against any of that, but this is clumsy. Feel like I'm stumbling and impeded by cardboard boxes and dead-sludge molasses.
