Poptimists Advent Calendar Day 7
Dec. 7th, 2005 04:57 pmThe best Christmas records - he theorises on the fly - are songs about Christmas that also fit with all the other music an act makes. So Belle And Sebastian squeezing into choristers outfits makes for a BAD Xmas treat, whereas Red Simpson singing about trucks and Slade doing a boozy stomper are GOOD Wobs fare, in that they're Red Simpson and Slade songs before they're Christmas songs.
That - aside from the top tune and heartfelt performance - is one reason why today's advent calendar song is such a favourite...
The O'Jays - Christmas Ain't Christmas, New Year Ain't New Year, Without The One You Love
This is first and foremost a top O'Jays record - a sweet hook, impassioned fallen-preacher solo verses, and a lush arrangement. It showed up on a MOJO Compilation this time last year but is otherwise not the Wobs comp fixture it perhaps should be.
