I want to comment but haven't heard it yet! I am totally amped for her album - called E=MC² of all things. Because Mariah is all you need for energy. I love that she's gone mad in the good way now (as opposed to the nervous breakdown way).

The-Dream is quite an interesting figure right now - he also wrote J Holiday's 'Bed', 'Stay Down' and 'Just Fine' off the new Mary J album, according to wikipedia Sugababes' 'Gotta Be You' and Brooke Valentine's 'Ghetto Superstarz' as well. His own album veers with astonishing rapidity from AMAZING to TERRIBLE - the single 'Falsetto' is one of the most irritating things to have come out of r&b in recent memory but 'Ditch That' and 'She Needs My Love' and 'Livin' A Lie' are u&k. I haven't made up my mind about #Shawty Is Da Shit' yet, it's kind of o_O really

This one is good, light and low-key, very pretty, goes well with the spring weather and has the feel of something that might grow on me a lot more. The "I will HUNT YOU DOWN" restrained-menace bits are best.

'Ditch That' is the best I think - I first heard it on Rich J's Idolator mix and assumed it was some awesome new bulldyke rapper, the lyrics are all about how a girl should ditch her man and get with the narrator over a 4/4 beat and some fantastically busy bubbling synths. Rich said he sped it up slightly but on the original The-Dream still sounds like a girl. I was going to submit it to the poptimism podcasts!

I like this! It's quite R Kelly-like in the vocal phrasing - I do like that stoccato singing style very much as it really picks out bonkers lyrics for me (I have trouble picking up on them otherwise). For example: "If there's a camera up in here/Then I'd best not catch this flick/On YouTube, Youtuuuube!" Awesome.

That is totally the best lyric since "them chickens is ash and I'm lotion" off 'It's Like That'.

You know the original title for her new album was Illusions: The Butterfly Within? I think we should all take a moment to ponder the butterfly within today.

Also Tom I am nicking this title because it's pretty much sewn up Pun of the Year.

Meh. That sounds like Mariah Carey doing not a lot. The bonkers lyrics are good but it doesn't do it for me in the same way something like 'We Belong Together' did. Then again she can't release that kind of overblown luncay all the time I suppose but still.

But the singing is pretty far from crazy, in fact the only melisma you get is carefully and tastefully relegated to the background at the end; I think that Mariah was beaten down in the mid '90s - or made a decision to veer more towards the r&b mainstream, which for her was a bad choice because it toned down her exuberance - and went much more for atmospherics at the expense of her former skyrockets, and the single syllables of the '00s subdued her even more.

That said, "Touch My Body" is a nice track, but it doesn't touch "Make It Happen" (which got only three ticks in the canon poll! I was horrified!) or "Can't Let Go" or "Emotions."
