Mine own votes = Bodyrox (bosh Sprechgesang hurrah!) + Duffy (retro-detuned 60s production == week kneas on me, plus song is actually plenty gorgeous so ZEITGEISTER BEGONE except it may well tie in with the Winehouse success now I think of it?)

I get no real dislike for any of these (songs, not bands/artists), except perhaps Mutya for going Really Obvious with stuff indiekids have been doing since early Magnetic Fields at least. Must try harder.

Well, I would say that you want to make sure that the song is no longer rising (that is, not just "hasn't made the Top 40 after one week" but rather "is clearly not going to make the Top 40 ever, or at least not in the next six months, though it might come back 15 years from now as a lost classic, when it gets played in an ad").

See? Already started to fall. EMPIRICISM will show whether I'm premature here. I believe I will be proven WRONG in a few major cases, and RIGHT in the heryuge majority of them. No big deal, as I said, ^40 is DISQUALIFY.

Title: haha true. I've never really been a fan of Tanya's thing anyway, I associated teh werds more with ahem ahem debut-album Wonder Stuff.

It might be a good gauge of how well we can predict future hits! though I think you should do the top 100, which is available on www.theofficialcharts.com. Good idea anyway, though I was hoping to get away without having to tick Duffy, which I kind of don't mind; the tinge of folk to her sound saves her from being another boring nice white girl doing ersatz soul, and is kind of reminiscent of, well, an ersatz version of the Beth Gibbons solo album.

Mutya is OK, though sadface at her missing the top 40! But not much more than OK.

I really want to do a US version of this but I don't have the poll facility :(

Top 100: yeah well the data are available, but not back in time, right? With top 75 (which I have the complete runs for back to the dawn of time) e.g. polyhex allows going back to check (except it hasn't been updated this week it seems).

Poll facility: hm I think I got that by just pressing a few buttons? Had to accept some advertising shenanigans or other though.

(there is also the question of poll bloat: going by last year, we can expect >20 songs a month on average using top 75 -- January was pretty quiet this year as usual)

If numbers become a problem I suggest not including annoying re-issues or old songs re-entering via downloads only, unless they haven't already been a hit.

Duffy has that tubular twang in her voice that's a bit Katie Melua - not neccesarily a bad thing but the song is really lifeless and puts a wet blanket over whatever potential she has. I'd like to hear her really let rip.

Have done the maths on waiting time now, using data from January through November 2007 (excluded December to avoid Christmas disturbances). Out of songs spending their first two weeks below #40, or debuting there and then dropping out, more than 85% never rose into the top 40. Increasing the waiting time to three weeks increases the proportion to 91%. But as this thing is to be done monthly, the two-weeks-only waiting time only applies to entries of the last week of the month; so on average about 3/4 of the entries have at least 91% chance of never becoming an AYIP hit, the final 1/4 having 85%.

Note btw that I use the traditional "week ending ..." dating system, ie the chart we've had for a week is counted as a February chart.
