As some of you will know I work for a market research company. Here's an email I sent round to the staff yesterday:

"So an easy pair of questions to divert you for half a minute:

Name a currently active band or recording artist a British teenager might know about.

Name a currently active sportsperson a British teenager might know about.

Simple as that! Name more than one if you like."

I have snipped the 'why' since you, The Kids, are not to be trusted with the secrets of The Man.

But I have now compiled the answers I got. What do you think people said (and what SHOULD they have said?)

ANSWERS! (Gaps to be filled in by commenters)

2. Arctics
3. Lily A
4. My Chemical Romance
5. Rihanna

1) the narctic monkeys, dizzee rarscel, gurlz aloud, WINEHOUSE, lily allen

2) oh god err, ashley cole? BECKHAM, all the footballers, I am crap at sport. Who gets into the papers? L Hamilton?

From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
do the teenagers read the papers though? I didn't, much, when I was. It's probably more "who gets on TV".

GPWM; tho for "papers" I was thinking of: papers, sleb-mags e.g. HEAT and radio (they're always blithering about so and so being on "the back pages" for being thrown out of a bar or dating a pussycat d0ll) - I don't watch a great deal of telly tho so suspect that yes, mine are the opinions of the old and out-of-date :(

I try to be aware of who's on TV without watching it, so mine probably are too - D Beckham seems obvious to me but come to think of it he is quite old?

Date: 2008-01-30 03:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] catsgomiaow.livejournal.com
He is quite old but the Beckham machine covers an AWFUL lot of bases - he does foopball, fashion, modelling, advertising etc etc - it was his ubiquity, rather than sportsmanship per se, that made me think of him.

PLUS HE IS ONLY 32 shutuuuuuup!

i'm guessing the pop list was the usual nonsense?

From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
this is quite easy? Leona Lewis and David Beckham but there are plenty of other choices, all of the above certainly (except Tony Hawk, who he?). Teenagers tend to know lots of recording artists and sportspeople!

tony hawk is the skateboard man who made lots of computer games as well.

this is true

Date: 2008-01-30 05:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pony-meat.livejournal.com

and i don't hear their name mentioned as much as other overrated pop

+any band with the name containing an instrument/genre must be aces, right?

Is the missing sportsman Fabregas? Thierry Henry? Sharapova? Federer? Fat Frankie Lampard?

As for the missing pop stars, I dread to think. Scouting For Girls? The Killers? Newton bloody Faulkner? James "whinging" Blunt?

it's always pleasing to realise that the tennis star system works out of all proportion to the sport's popularity - it really is such a minority sport BUT there are so many tennis players who are household names - Sharapova, Federer, the Williams sisters, Roddick, Kournikova is still technically active, Hingis until last year, Murray, maybe Nadal? Sadly probably not Henin or Mauresmo. By this time next year, almost certainly Djokovic, maybe Ivanovic.

They totally should've! A few people have mentioned Kanye which is also obvious.

People who suggested The Hoosiers = insane.

Maybe T2!

Missing sportsperson is Peter Crouch innit?

Musically, dunno. I would guess some people threw in stuff like Led Zeppellin, despite its not being "modern" but then again it could also be The Libertines.

(Do y'all watch Family Feud over there in London?? We should really be getting an "out of 100 people surveyed, top ten answers on the board" sort of indication of popularity of responses. How close was Winehouse to the Monkees?)
